In order for us to be able to provide much help, we would need you to attach the score you are having problems with and precise steps to reproduce the problem.
Adding a glissando *should* be as simply as selecting the first note and double clicking the palette icon. Or dragging the icon to the first note. Either method places the glissando in the standard way. Handles would be needed only for fine adjustments, and while this isn't supported in the current version, it will in a future version.
