Not to erase notes when the measure length is adjusted & Auto final measure adjust when there is an anacrusis

• Feb 13, 2016 - 18:04

I don't know if I missed something in the way, but...

I want to ask two feature requests to a future version of MuseScore:

1) To avoid to erase notes when we change the real length of a measure. For example: when we start a piece with an anacrusis, but we didn't set it in the beginning (we change the length of the first measure when we finished to write the piece); in this case, MuseScore erases all the notes of that first measure. I'm asking to change this behaviour (MuseScore should leave all the notes which are into the part of the measure that remains in the anacrusis).

2) When we use an anacrusis, we'd expect that the last measure length will be automatically adjusted to fill the "missed" part of the first measure. It isn't the normal behaviour of MuseScore. Indeed, MuseScore jumps this "non-written" law.

Just my crazy ideas.

Please, if this requests have some solution, into the current version, and I don't know, please, let me know.

Greetings & Blessings from Chile!!!!!!!

Juan

If you change the actual duration of measure from 4/4 to 3/4, there is no way to not lose a note - the whole point of the change is to lose a note. So it's just a question of *which* notes you lose. Sometimes it happens to be the last note you want to lose, sometimes it happens to be the first, but MuseScore cannot read your mind to know which you want. So when in doubt, simply copy what you want to keep before mking the change, then paste it back.

The "non-written" law is not written for a reason - it is not used much any more by most publishers for msot music. It was the norm for short dance pieces in the classical era, and for hymns, but it is pretty much not used in any other situations any more. So if you have one of those situations or have some other special reason to want to do this (I'm told it is still taught as part of the standardized theory curriculum in the UK), you can do so manually. I could ijagine adding a checkbox to the Create New Score Wizard, right below where you specify the pickup, to specify that you wnt ther last measure shortened as well. But given that in many cases, people dn't know how many measures they want in their piece before they start and thus they are normally appending or and deleting measures to/from the end of their piece later, I think this would ultimate just cause more confusion.

Mmmm, could be.

But, your idea to add something to the measure dialog box is good.

About the erased notes, maybe MuseScore should act in two different ways:

1) If the changed length is on the first measure, then MS should erase all but last.

2) If the changed length in any other measure (not the first), then MS should erase all.

Just a crazy idea.
