Part Extraction

• Feb 18, 2016 - 18:29

I can't remember if I've mentioned this before, but I can't find it if I have. Anyway, when writing band scores, I come across an issue. What happens is this: In the score, I combine (for example) the 2nd and third trumpets into one staff, as per the norm. However, when it comes time to extract parts, the 2nd and 3rd trumpet should each have their own part, but I can only seem to get a combined part, same as is on the score. What I've had to do to get around this is simply create the parts manually. Does anyone know of a way around this?

Thanks in advance.

I'd probably not bother putting both parts on one staff for the score - many modern scores don't do this either, precisely because most notation programs don't support it (or didn't until recently). But if it's important to preserve that look, I'd just have three staves - one for part A, one for part B, and one for parts A & B combined. I'd leave the last of these alone until I was basically done with the score, then I'd combine the first two staves using copy & paste + voice exchange. I'd mark the first two staves invisible in the score, and I would use the part for the third.
