How to get symbols (from F2 palette) into normal text or lyrics?

Simply putting the text into edit mode, opening the F2 palette and clicking one of the special symbols doesn't work.
I'd want to add an 8th break symbol, for a syllable of one stanza of the lyrics

I never use F2 anymore due to its co-assignment as a shortcut key to 'Transpose Up'. I seem to have trouble remembering what F2 does in what context, so I've been actively avoiding it.

I've meant to mention that the numerous ways of accessing symbols is confusing: F2, Alt-F9, Z, the 'Insert Special Characters (F2)' button on the left end of the text editing toolbar. Even the overlapping terminology - symbols vs. special characters - is confusing, and makes the whole process of adding non-standard text a matter of trial and error for me.

A special character is added to a text element via F2 or the insert special character button in the text tool bar when the text is in edit mode. Once the special character dialog is displayed, double click to insert the character in the text.

A symbol is a single element, not editable. It can be inserted by selecting a notehead, press Z and double click the symbol from the symbols palette in the master palette.

Does that clear the issue? Any suggestion to make it clearer to users?
Both features could be somehow merged. Suppressing the symbol construct and replace it by text for example. On another hand, they seem to serve a different purpose.

I'm not sure what Alt+F9 should do. It's not a MuseScore shortcut right?

It's indeed a bit unfortunate that the F2 key is also used to transpose the score when not in edit mode. We could change this, any suggestions?
