MIDI String Ensemble patches
Are the MIDI string ensemble patches (#49 and #50) available in MuseScore 2.0? If so, I haven't figured out how to find them. I have a score with both solo violin and the usual first and second violin sections, and it would be nice to be able to use different patches to differentiate the solo part from the massed strings.

Yes they are - obtainable from the mixer (F10 will bring that up)

This request is pretty frequent. Could we add back the Violins instrument we had in 1.3?

Just "Violins" or more? "Violas"? "Violons"?
We had (in 1.3) "Violins 1", "Violins 2", "Violas", Violoncellos", and "Contrabasses" , all patch 48

I don't see the need for Violins 1 and Violins 2!
Un-necessary duplication when all that's required is to add a number to the part name :)

True, I was just listing what was available in 1.3

That would be the short term fix.
Personally I think that merging the mixer controls with the Instrument control dialogue is the eventual way forward as proposed in this thread......

Are you going to do a PR?

I'm just asking because we are working on a 2.0.1 version, let's say, next week and this is a popular request (even if I couldn't find reference of where I read it already).

Just created a PR for it: https://github.com/musescore/MuseScore/pull/1951
Picked channel 49 for Violins and Violas, and channel 50 for Violoncellos and Contrabasses, MusicXML ID of 'strings.group'.

Channel? MIDI has only 16 channels!
Sure you man Program or Patch
Bad idea to have different patch for the bass strings - the attack is completely different on Patch 50, so you will run into articulation problems.

Yes I did mean patch. Which ones to take then where? They are called "Strings" and "Slow Strings" in Mixer

I would use Patch 49 - Stirngs for all the string section instruments.

OK, changed. However tst_importmidi fails on Travis, any idea why and what to adjust to make it pass?

The failure in tests revealed the "Strings Section" instrument. This could be enough in fact.

Sort of, but then the user still has to change the name to "Violins" if that's what they want - as it normally would be when writing for orchestra. "Violins 1" and "Violins 2" actually. But it's debatable whether it *really* makes sense to have those in the instruments list.
We do have a "Strings Section" using patch 49. Range and Clef wise it only covers Vionlins though.
