Midi Keyboard Problem
Hello everyone,
I'm new to Musescore and have an existing midi keyboard. I'm trying to use the midi keyboard to input notes on the staff in real time, sans duration, but not having any luck. I use my midi keyboard with other applications, so I know I have to setup the I/O before doing this, as in ASIO/ Line 6 Kb37, but still not having any luck. Entering notes with a mouse is tedious, if anyone has any advice or if I'm missing something, it would be greatly appreciated. I began wondering if I need to download the JACK app in order for this to work, but I dont think I should need to.

There is no way to enter notes from MIDI keyboard in real time. You can use the midi keyboard to enter pitches, and use your computer one toi enter duration. It works with 0.9.5 if you only have one midi device. On 0.9.6, there is a remaining bug, so it's not usable.
The faster way to enter notes (for me, being not a pianist) is the computer keyboard. Read Note entry

Thanks, thats what I've been doing, entering through the keyboard on my laptop. Okay, well, thanks for the information!!

I saw the Video for 9.5, so, my question is did the bug in 9.6 get fixed in version 1.0 and if not is there a way to still download 9.5?
Thanks,
Gary

You can enter notes with MIDI keyboard in MuseScore 1.0.

The Video I watched is on the home page for musescore.org under Getting Started and it was #4 Note Entry with a MIDI Keyboard and Playback. It specifically says, in the video, that this was done on Verson 0.9.5 and this was the forum message I read referring to 9.6
There is no way to enter

So I am a lttlle confused. The 9.5 Video mad my heart leap because it looked to simple. I have not been able to do it on 9.6 and I was hoping it was possible with 1.0 and if not how can I download a copy of 9.5
Thanks,
Gary

MuseScore 1.0 supports step by step note entry as explained in the video but does not support realtime note entry (you play anything and MuseScore would magically create a score from it)

I can do that in 9.6 if all the notes are the same value. all 1/4 or all 1/8 etc. What I am looking for is the ability for it to recognize what value each note is. I am assuming that this is "realtime note entry" Do you agree that the video for 9.5 showed that happening or did I totally miss what they were showing? If it is doing realtime on 9.5 do you know of any way I can get a copy of vers 9.5?

No. MuseScore never supported real time MIDI entry. It's very debatable to say that's a quicker method to enter music since it would make a lot of errors.

So basically we can set a value and play and change pitch and then go back and edit the notes to create the song. Makes sense I guess. The programming for real time would be insane at best. Thanks for the input. It is greatly appreciated.

No, you don't "go back and edit" notes. You simply select (using the computer keyboard, or mouse) the rhythmic value of a note *before* you play that note. This is the way step time entry works in most MIDI-oriented programs I've used.
Real time entry would probably be difficult to implement, but more importantly, it just wouldn't work very well. MuseScore can already import a MIDI file. Try playing in real time into a MIDI sequencer than importing that file, and see how close MuseScore comes to producing readable notation. It's miles and miles away, and you'd spend more time fixing the issues than entering the notes one a time (step time entry) in the first place. Unless you always played your quarter notes 8exactly* one beat long, and your eighth notes 8exactly* half a beat, and in perfect tempo, etc. Even the best pianists don't play that precisely. Programs that attempt to recreate a usable piece of music from real time performance try to guess what you really meant, and some do a better job of it than others, but I've yet to see one that creates a score that I could get into usable shape with less effort than step time. Actually, I don't even find step time MIDI entry any faster than just using my computer keyboard - any time saved in actual note entry is lost in correcting enharmonic spellings.

On the same score ( pardon the pun ) is there anyway to stop musescore from anticpating what note values you want? That feature is driving me nuts. :)

Note sure what you mean about MuseScore anticipating note values. It enters the note value *you* select.

When I enter a series of notes, lets say a 1/4 - 1/8 etc... it will automatically put in rests. If I go back and change the value of a note, lets lay I make the 1/8 a dotted 1/8 it will change the value of the quarter note. This make sense?

MuseScore requires every measure to have the numbers of beats specified by the time signature. So when editing a measure, you do have to keep this in mind. Normally, this ends up being a good thing, but there are situations when one might wish it otherwise. Usually, its just a matter of realizing there is another better way to do whatever it is you are trying to do. Is there a specific case you have in mind?

Ok here is an example of what I ran into last night. And this may be just my lack of knowledge about how the programs works I had notation that was 1/8-1/4-1/4 When I decided to change the 1st 1/4 to an 1/8 note it put automatically put and 1/8 rest in too. When I tried to delete the 1/8 rest it would not delete nor let me move it and it just kept getting worse from there. I finally deleted the measure and started over. I am looking for a way to just enter and edit the notes without the program doing anything automatically at first. Is this even possible? Would deleting time signature do it?
Thanks,
Gary
I think I have this discussion going with you and also another thread at the same time. The other thread is call turn off automatic functions in the general discussion forum. Can we please move this there so I am not wasting everyone's time? I really appreciate all of this help.
