Lyrics not resizing

• Sep 13, 2015 - 02:02

I have a song in which the lyrics were originally entered in Times New Roman per the default text style. I'm trying to change both the typeface and the point size using Edit Text Style; neither change is taking place. I have one lyric where the point size changed; but I'm having to go syllable by syllable to make the typeface change. The other three lyrics spaced themselves vertically to accommodate the point size change; but neither the typeface nor the actual point size changed. I don't have time to go through this syllable by syllable; the project is due tomorrow. What if anything am I doing wrong; or is this a bug?

I'm guessing this score was imported from 1.3. Prior to 2.0, style info was hard coded in the text. Pressing the reset button as suggested above removes that hard-coding, thus allowing the new 2.0 text sxtyling mechanism to work as it was designed to. This extra step (the reset) is not normally needed except for imported scores.

That does seem to be the case, Marc. I believe this was originally a 1.3 score. I was able eventually to get the reset button to override the original style in favor of the chosen style. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a way to isolate the first verse (marked "Refrain" on the score) and boldface it separately. Selecting all the lyrics in verse 1 and trying to change them to bold changed only the originally selected syllable. Wound up going in manually and boldfacing each syllable in the refrain. Tedious, but effective; thank God it was a short verse. Unless there was something else I was overlooking. Thanks, Marc, et al.

A feature of the s/w I've never noticed before. Been too busy using about 8% of its capabilities just putting music on a page. There it is, that little button marked "New" at the bottom of the stack. Thanks for pointing that out, Marc. Really, I never noticed it before.

Easily understandable - it's new with 2.0. Another important advantage to 2.0's handling of text style is that if you change the settings for a text style, it immediately affects all text with that style. So it's to your advantage to use text styles where possible rather than hard-coding font into into individual text items.

Sounds like a good idea...although, and I'm guessing this is some kind of a combination of hard-coding from 1.3 and applying styles from 2.0.2, the styles as applied did one thing to the lyrics; but creating a style with the same basic parameters as the styles in force and applying the new style to an old lyric threw everything pretty much out the window. The new style appeared much, much larger than the surrounding type; and the only basic difference was that the new style was boldfaced. So I applied the original lyric style and went through syllable by syllable boldfacing the refrain. I'll have to try styles from zero one time and see how that goes.

Without seeing the score and precise steps to reproduce the problem you remember seeing once, it's hard to guess what might have been happening. I can just say that the text style facility really does work, and quite well, but hard-coded font information carried over from 1.3 will cause it to not work as well as it otherwise could.
