no drums with unison soundfont

• May 12, 2009 - 05:27

Hi everyone. I am complete newbie to musescore. I was able to
download, unpack, and load the unison.sf2 soundfont package.
Most of the voices seem to work, except the drums. I tried both
the 3 and the 5 line staves. I don't know what sound card is in my
computer, but it is an ibm thinkpad running XP. Thanks for help
getting me going.

well, I just installed a new drum kit soundfont. Now, all instrument clefs,.... bass, piano, etc, play drum sounds. However, nothing still plays in the drum/percussion clef. I don't know how to install more than one soundfont into musescore, or if it is possible. The unison soundfont must not be loaded now. I am wondering if the drums in the unison soundfont might need a different bass clef or something. Maybe I'll just try a different large soundfont, although the space on my machine is getting low.

It seems a bit inefficient to have a large soundfont file with a lot of data that one might never use. It would seem more economical to be able to load a small file soundfont for each instrument as you might need them, and have musescore recognize separate soundfonts for each instrument.

Thanks in advance for any help gettingt the drums playing in my musescore.

The latest revisions of mscore load only the needed part of a large soundfont. This reduces memory consumption and the startup time of the program. Loading more than one soundfont is not supported yet but using a large one should not be a problem anymore.
Lastest mscore versions implement drum sounds a little bit different. Drumsets are handled like normal voices and can be selected in the mixer.

when you say load I suppose you mean in the RAM, not the initial download. That is a very good point, but the disk space is a factor as well.

Your clue about the mixer helped in a roundabout way, in that counter-intuitively, when I unchecked the drums in the drum channel there, the drums could then be entered on the drum staff, albeit in a very extended note range. You would think that the bass, snare, and high hat would be on the staff somewhere, but the bass drum was a few octaves down.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I am using 9.4 with the Unison. Like I said above, for some strange reason, when I unchecked the drums in the drum channel of the mixer, the drum track could then be entered.

I am now trying to figure out how to enter notes, melodies, time values, and chords and such. It doesn't seem like the easiest thing in the world to tame.

Thanks for reply. I am sorry but I can't get it going. I rechecked the drum box in the mixer window, and pulled up the palette, but there was nothing that appeared when the drum palette is opened, except an empty box, and nothing is able to be entered in the drum staff.. I am still able to get drum sounds when the drum box is unchecked. Thanks in advance for advising.
