Piano Velocity Question

• Oct 27, 2011 - 02:04

Long question:

I've been having problems with the velocity of notes in a piano score. It seems that if you use a dynamic mark (p, pp, mp, mf, etc...) for a note in the treble clef, if it is played at the same time as a note in the bass clef the velocity will be the same for both. I want to be able to change that. Is there a way?

I notice that you can load the staffs (bass and treble) separately, then join them with a piano bracket. Will this make a difference rather than loading the whole piano staff at once? Anyone know?

The reason I want to do this is that I have a piece where the left hand plays a very soft arpeggio similar to the Moonlight Sonata, and the right hand carries the melody for the most part and needs to be slightly louder than the left hand or it gets drowned out. I want it to sound good. Plus it might help to make all my piano compositions sound better in areas.

Hi,

One solution is to try the following:

Highlight all the notes you want to have either louder or softer. Right click on the first note of the group and open the area called NOTE PROPERTIES. Go to VELOCITY and change that number - lower or higher - depending if the selected notes are to be louder or softer. Close the window and check to see if the sound is what you are trying to achieve.

Hey,

Thanks for the quick response. I'll try it if there's no bugs. I've been having problems with menus not opening in certain panels. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. Anyway, it looks like that might be a solution, so thanks. Now I might not have to copy/paste my work over again.

Well, the simpler solution of all is to keep on using dynamics and if you want it to work only on the G staff, right click on it -> Midi properties -> Staff and it will apply to the staff only and not the full part/instrument. No need of note properties or 2 instruments on that one.
