Using keyboard to notate

Can anybody help? My Roland FP5 is "speaking" to my laptop but when I enter a note using the piano keyboard all I get is the message "a note must be selected." If I use the mouse to create a note and then use the piano keyboard to go on to the next note, all it does is change the original note. Am I missing something? Is there a computer key I need to press to progress on to the next note(s)?
