Problem with Multi-measure Rests

• Nov 24, 2011 - 16:33

I have a score that was imported from MusicXML and when I create parts, it will not create multi-measure rests. It is driving me nuts. Does anyone have any insight as to what is going wrong. I have attached the score.

I can at least tell you why they're not creating multi-measure rests. If you open a part, right-click on an empty measure, and choose "Measure Properties", you'll see the box checked that says "Break multi-measure rests," which will keep MuseScore from creating a multi-measure rest using that measure. Unfortunately I can't see a way to quickly change this setting on a whole part without doing it one measure at a time. Even then not all of the measures will convert correctly, and I can't figure out why. I can only guess that it's something not importing correctly in the XML file.

Thanks a lot for taking the time to figure out why it is happening. To me, this seems like a bug. It is much more sensible that the default behavior should be for measures to not break multi-measure rests. At the very least there should be a way to change it for a whole group of measures at one time. Anyway, thanks for you help. Hopefully this will become a real bug and get fixed.

I agree that imported files should have the toggle set to not break multi-measure rests by default (which is the opposite of the way it's set now). What I can't figure out is why some measures in the attached piece stubbornly wouldn't go into the multi-measure rest, even after I unchecked the box. I believe that problem may be deep in the code, and possibly caused by whatever program created the XML file, but I can't be sure. (I just looked at the file in MuseScore, I don't really know how to delve into the code.)

You should be able to change that setting for multiple measures by clicking in the first empty measure, shift-clicking on the last empty measure, and shift-right-clicking to bring up the dialogue box. Then you can uncheck the "Break multi-measure rest" box for a group of measures, but that didn't work on this piece. Again, I think that's a problem with the XML file that this was imported from, but I'm just guessing.
