Before writing I had already gone to the transposition section and selected the interval, down, unison option with no results. Can you tell me what I am to select once I again return to the transposition page (or any other page I am supposed to use)?
I do NOT wish to use the 8vb feature; I would like the base notes in the staff to contain the desired octave.

As I said, select, Ctrl+↓, that's all there is to it. Transpose by an unison is a NOP, and you can't add octaves there (you can in the staff properties dialog, but this is for a different purpose, transposing instruments)

I am sorry, Jo-Jo, that I did not understand your initial explanation. I did open all the links you and Shoichi so generously provided but still could not find my way. I understand now and following your instructions has worked for me.
All of you have endless patience with those like me who try hard to figure things before imposing on your time but, despite my efforts, I still need help from time to time.......

Ctrl+down is indeed the dead simple way to transpose something an octave - a single click, no dialogs required.
But if you *do* choose to use the transposition dialog, a "unison" is no change at all (that is what is meant by NOP - short for "No OPeration"). You'd need to specify *octave* as the interval. So if you wish to use this method - much more work than a simple Ctrl+down, but worth knowing about - you select the region, go to Notes / Transpose, and select the desired interval,. Again, it would be pointless to do this just to transpose an octave, but it's a good way to transpose by *other* intervals.
