How will the new MuseScore affect my shortcuts?

• Dec 9, 2016 - 00:59

There is discussion on the forums that leads me to believe that MS 2.1 is to be released in the near future. I was curious if the upgrade will simply replace the current application or if it will put it in a new a new folder like the upgrade from v1 to v2.

I ask this because I have added to the default shortcuts (and changed 1 other) and I don't want to have to try to figure out what is standard and what I changed when I upgrade. I realize I'm jumping the gun a bit here, but some of the developers are probably working on the upgrade app right now.

As a semi-funny side note, I changed F2 because it was assigned to the special characters dialog for staff, system and other text as well as transposing the entire score up a semi-tone with a key change at nearly all other times. When transcribing scores originally written in other languages, I include the foreign words. I then translate the foreign words into English. French and German have a lot of necessary markings on the letters that we don't use in English. I kept accidentally pressing F2 at the wrong time and my score would transpose. I wouldn't realize it until I went to change the key signature or put in an accidental and discovered the note suddenly didn't need it. I would have to revert to a previous version of the score because I didn't know what I'd entered since the key change and didn't want any extraneous accidentals left on the score.

I believe 2.0.4 or 2.1 will replace 2.0.x. I'tll keep the configs though.
But we'll know more if and when it happens and it should be documented by then

Just to confirm what Jojo said. MuseScore 2.1, once released, will override MuseScore 2.0.3 by default. However, they will use the same configuration file and so if you changed the shortcuts, palette, preferences etc... they will be kept during the upgrade.

That being said, the F2 shortcut is misleading for many people... Any thoughts on removing/replacing one of the two shortcuts in the default configuration?

I personally would remove the transpose (shift-)F2 shortcut. The times I needed to transpose the full score in these past 5 years of using MuseScore can be counted on both hands. When they do occur though, I'm so used to using transpose from the menu for smaller sections, that I do a select all and then use the menu again.

To me, the frequency of the functionality is way to low to warrant (such an easy/) a shortcut.

I support the notion of removing the F2 shortcuts for transposing a score. Way way way too easy for people to do by accident, and it's not especially that this is the exact form of transposition that someone wants in the cases where one does actually intend to transpose. I'd personally be fine with leaving those commands with no default shortcut, or requiring some additional modifier like Ctrl to activate them.
