Musescore 2.0.3.1 hangs with spinning circle on launch
I'm running OS X Yosemite (10.10.5) on a MacBook Pro and I've been happily using MuseScore for a few years after having been a Finale user since the 1980s. What a relief! Thank you! However. . .
When I simply double-click the MuseScore 2.0.3.1 icon today I'm shown an empty single-instrument score in page view and a second later the spinning circle begins and spins forever. Force quit indicates that MuseScore isn't responding.
I tried double-clicking an existing score with exactly the same result.
I reloaded a copy of MuseScore 2.0.3.1 and ran that, with exactly the same result.
Is this likely to be corruption in some preference file or other detritus? Are there files I should delete?
At this point it occurs to me that I'm on the road with the same MacBook Pro that I use at home, however at home I have a second monitor, so MuseScore could be trying to put a window on the second monitor... If so, how can I move all windows back to the single available monitor? If this is the problem, MuseScore should really be able to detect this failure and move any wandering windows to the existing screen.
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Jojo-Schmitz,
Thanks for the pointer, but all that does is remove all my customization and display a different view of an empty score before it hangs permanently with the spinning icon. Any other ideas?
Best,

an experiment:
Open Edit / Preferences ...-> General put the tick to 'empty Start' or 'Start with score:' (in the case, navigate to the scores folder)

Shoichi,
Thanks for the suggestion, but are you talking about the Preferences in MuseScore? If so, please remember that MuseScore never actually starts for me. It hangs before I can do anything.
Best,
Peter

You're right, forgive me. Have you followed the instructions from Jojo, in particular:
'the main MuseScore preference file is located at ~/Library/Preferences/org.musescore.MuseScore2.plist.
The other preferences (palette, session...) are in ~/Library/Application\ Support/MuseScore/MuseScore2/'?
Do you have also tried to completely uninstall MSS and proceed with a new 'clean' installation?

Shoichi,
Yes, I moved the preferences file and the whole subtree of application support files without any benefit. I also downloaded a new version of 2.0.3.1 and ran that with the same results.
At this point I think I'll wait until I'm back home and see if there's something about the setup there that allows it to work.
It's a shame that MuseScore fails in this way; It had been so bug-free ever since I started using it.
Thanks again for your help.

I'm wondering whether you could uninstall 2.0.3.1 and attempt to use 2.0.3 instead?
2.0.3.1 was released to fix issues specifically for OS X Sierra, so if you're not on that OS version 2.0.3 is functionally identical.

That would indicate a network issue. You could try to run MuseScore with the -w switch (just like you did with -F but replace -F by -w) to start without the webview. If it works, then maybe you installed a browser plugin or changed your network configuration recently.

Thanks, but unfortunately
mscore -w
also hangs with a busy cursor.

Well you can always try with mscore -s -w -F
