Every edit throws me away from where I am

• Dec 30, 2012 - 17:39

I am editing a score and having a really frustrating time with it. You see, every little change I make throws my display to another place. Because every not, every letter in lyrics, every tie changes the whole score's layout. A lot. And I don't get back to where I am. I have to look for the place after every press of a button. I cannot get any work done this way.
Why is it so and can I change it?

This isn't normal behavior for the program, but it does happen very occasionally. As usual when asking for help with a score, it helps to post the score. But I think what is probably going on is that one of the lines early on in the piece is just on the edge of either fitting one more measure or not (like, it has 99.99% enough space to fit another measure), and every time MuseScore needs to redraw the score (which it does on every edit), it keeps rounding off differently. You can usually fix this when it happens by changing just about anything - either add explicit line breaks to the already-completed lines if you like where they are, or select all and change the stretch (hit "{" or "}" to reduce or increase it, or change the "space" value in Layout / Page Settings. Anything to change things up so that you're not right on the edge.

At least, that's always been my assumption as to what is going on in the rare cases where I've seen this happen, and fiddling with one of these settings always works for me.

By the way, I believe that "continuous view" is already implemented in MuseScore 2.0 (not yet released, but you can try a nightly build now). This is similar to "Panorama" in Sibelius or "Scroll View" in Finale.

With continuous view, this kind of jumping around in edit mode won't happen.
