A subsequent change of note values can be a difficult thing, isn't it?

• 12. Nov 2017 - 16:05

I habe a melodie with lyrics and want to change subsequently the value of a quarter note to an eighth. I need four steps for this little action. Am I wrong?
1. I change the value from the quarter to the eighth. A rest from the value of an eighth appears.
2. I must cut the following quarter and paste it to the place of the rest.
3. I must add a dot to stretch the pasted quarter to a doted quarter.
4. I must rescribe the lost lyric.

Pffff, that's a long way. Who knows a shorter one.
I added a file, where you can see all the described steps.

Bye

This is the German forum and German is normally the language used in it, but since my native language is English I will answer in English. In the future, use the English forum if you want to discuss something in English. Also, there are more people there to give advice and opinions.

In the case where there is no notes crossing bar lines as in your examples, I would simply reenter the correct notes. It is far easier than using the cut and paste method you described. The usual reason I would use your method would be if the correction affected at least the following measure, such as the 1/4 note on beat 4 needs to be two tied 1/4 notes and the next few measures need to be shifted a beat. Yes, I have done this in copying music so I have to decide if it faster to retype the section of music or use the cut a paste method. I will use the cut and paste method if there are a lot of 16th notes in the measure and I realize I failed to dot the first 1/8 note and I now have a 16th rest at the end of the measure that shouldn't be there.
