Upgrading

• Jun 5, 2020 - 12:12

Hello,
If I upgrade to a newer version of Musescore, will the pieces I created using an older versiion be saved. The reason I ask is becuase the last time I upgraded all the material that I had created using the previsous version was lost.

Please advise,

It is always best to make a backup copy of your files, for example on a USB stick.
But installing a new version does not delete your files.
Which version are you using? On which operating system?

MuseScore updated would never ever touch your existing scores, whatever you think to have gone wrong last time, it certainly was not MuseScore's fault

No version of MuseScore has ever deleted any user scores. If you created scores using an older version, saved them to your computer, then updated, those files are still absolutely still on your computer in the exact same folder where you saved them to.

But, each major versions of MuseScore has a different default folder where it saves and looks for files if you don't tell it to go somewhere else. So probably you just neglected to tell MuseScore to look in the folder where your older files were.

I am finding the transition to MuseScore3 from 2 extremely frustrating :( I keep trying to put my files into Musescore3 and then when I try to open them, I get the load error message:
"Cannot read file C:/Users/vankaynor/Documents/MuseScore3/Scores/MuseScore2 files/B3.mscz:
This score was saved using a newer version of MuseScore.
Visit the MuseScore website to obtain the latest version."

I may be computer illiterate, but this seems very inconvenient - to not have files automatically transferred.

A separate issue I've had: When trying to open saved album, I get message "Cannot read file"

Thanks for any help with these two issues. I'm trying to publish a book and these problems are making me reconsider MuseScore (which I had loved until these problems).

@vankaynor
"This score was saved using a newer version of MuseScore."
This message suggests that you are trying to use MuseScore 2 to open a file which has been saved while using MuseScore 3. That's never going to work...

You must be clear in your own mind where you stored your "old" files, which were presumably created using MS 2? On my computer the MS 2 files default to a path like this:
C:/Users/vankaynor/Documents/MuseScore2/Scores
That's where MS 2 format files should always stay. And if you want to keep them in MS 2 format then you should only open them with MS 2.

When you use MS 3, you must be aware that opening a file in older MS 2 format and then saving the file will change the format of that file permanently to the newer MS 3 format. So it makes sense to keep these new-format files in a separate folder. Otherwise you will continue to get confusing messages if you are still using both MS 2 and MS 3.

In your case, you seem to be storing MS 2 files in the folder where MS 3 stores its files:
Cannot read file C:/Users/vankaynor/Documents/MuseScore3/Scores/MuseScore2 files/B3.mscz:
Possibly that's the cause of your confusion?

A separate issue I've had: When trying to open saved album, I get message "Cannot read file"
MS 3 does not yet support the Album feature, so if you are heavily dependent on Albums you are probably going to have to use MS 2 for some aspects of your publication.
