Playback not working
So I downloaded Musescore 3.4.2 and the playback hasn't worked once. The playback menu, View -> Synthesizer and View-> Mixer options are all greyed out. My I/O menu is empty. I'm working on a MacBook Air with OS Catalina (10.15).

I looked through the applicable links and I've already gone through those steps in trying to troubleshoot the issue.

The only time I see all those things greyed-out is if I don't have a score loaded. What are you trying to playback?

I've tried playing back a test score where I wrote out a little bit on the treble clef, but as part of my troubleshooting I downloaded a general user orchestral sample from this site and that won't play either.

If you go to Audio in System preferences, anything activated there? Sorry, it's been awhile since I had my hands on a Mac. I do remember that they can be a bit picky depending on software, sometimes.

In the Sound menu of System Preferences I see my internal speakers listed for output and the internal microphone listed for input. Nothing else is there.

How about the I/O section in MuseScore/Preferences. Also hit the restart audio devices button. Both may have already been suggested. Restart your Mac.

The attached image is what I see in the I/O section of preferences. I've tried that button you suggested as well as resetting all preferences to default and have turned my Mac on and off several times in trying to resolve the issue.

Is it possible on Mac to update the audio driver? At least for some users (not sure if they used a Mac) did it work.

I've looked into that, and I can't find any current information on it. The most recent solution I found is from 2009 for macOS 10.6.
I have the same problem on OS X 10.13. Musescore was working fine, and stopped playing back yesterday. without having done any updates or upgrades. Quicktime player 7, which I used occasionally to play back midi files quickly, also stopped working at the same time. All other apps (Finale, Cubase) playback normally, either through external synths or their own sound banks. Factory reset etc doesn't work, View->Synthesizer is greyed out, Preferences->I/O doesn't accept anything.

Maybe any useful information/messages if you start MuseScore and/or Quicktime player from command line? - just a wild guess, I don't have a Mac.
In MuseScore preferences I assume you've already checked "Restart audio and MIDI devices"?

done it all, restarted the system, reinstalled MuseScore, tried the command line interface, I get the hardly meaningful message 'handler not found'

Yep, really hardly meaningful.
Maybe also worth to check, if there's any running process/sound application, which blocks it?

I found a hint on internet, restarted the computer in safe mode, then restarted again, and now everything works again. weird but wonderful.... thanks for trouble reacting to my posts!
don't know if you've worked it out yet, but what worked for me was to restart my Mac in safe mode by holding Shift at start-up time, and then rebooted again. now everything works for me.
