synthesiser and mixer greyed out in version 3.5

I've been using version 2 sucessfully, but version 3.5 has the synthesiser and mixer greyed out. I downloaded and reinstalled the soundfont, was told to go to synthesiser to use the soundfont. If I go int edit preferences/ and try to add a soundfont to the paths, when I go into user/share/, the sounds folder does not show. I am using Linux Mint 19.3 Cinnamon.
