Ver.: 3.5.0.13199 Rev.: 43c5553 is painfully slow

• Aug 23, 2020 - 08:28

I have an empty, full orchestra score up and I'm just adding my first 8-bars, a 1st violin line. It's taken me, no kidding, over AN HOUR to get the line written.
Is it actually possible to compose anything with this version?
Slow is not the word. Glacial would be more like it.

...Or is it me?

Look, I'm willing to learn if there is a way. - Or do I need to buy Sibelius?

This rarely does any good, better revert MuseScore to factory settings", while a little abrupt, actually did the trick.

Thank you. I think I'm back in business!

There must be something else going on besides MuseScore here. Are other programs working glacially slow also? When was the last time you restarted your computer? I realize these probably seem to be silly questions, but we've got to start somewhere if we're going to help you understand your problem.

Nothing should have changed to make 3.5 slower than previous versions, actually we've made continual improvements.

Most likely there is some other process on your system hogging the CPU or other resources, because when I load your score, I don't notice anything unusual about it. Can you give a precise series of steps you perceive to be slow? I tried one of my standard tests, choosing an empty staff, going to note input mode, and entering 16 quarter notes as fast as I can (tapping "C" over and over). I couldn't get it to delay even the slightest bit; each note entered within a matter of milliseconds.

Hi Marc,

I would love nothing more than to agree with you. I have, today, uninstalled the program, downloaded a new copy of the 64-bit program for Win-10 and reinstalled.

I am getting the same thing. I have always worked before with few, maybe 6 staves at a time. Never a problem. The awful performance happens with a full symphony orchestra of staves. Not notes, mind you, just staves that go for a measly 32 bars and only 2 staves of notes 8-bars long!

Some things are quick, even instantaneous, like copying a string of measures. However, while selecting a string of measures from complete measure to complete measure is quick - selecting a string of measures from a note to another note several measures away causes the system to pause, white-out, and then after a couple of seconds, come back with the measures selected.

If I go to new note entry mode ("n") I can click on a line or staff to enter one note. The next clicks do not enter new notes, they are just put in the buffer for a long wait of several seconds. The system then whites-out and waits for a long time - eventually returning with my new notes entered.

Same if I select a note and hit the up-arrow several times. No response for some time. If I do anything else in that sequence, like hit a right arrow, the screen whites-out. Moving notes manually is out of the question.

Chord entry, likewise. I can enter one chord name and hit space-bar (1 or more times) and enter another. The system loses me after showing the first Chord Symbol - then it all goes into the buffer - and if I go too far ahead everything whites-out.

Here, I'm showing you a picture of the load during these white-outs. (See attached image of Task Manager.) No, there is no significant load on this computer when MuseScore locks up. I do not believe this machine is being challenged. Heck, Chrome uses that memory load when it's sleeping! (And no other significant apps were running at the time of this image.)

Page View/Continuous -Not a solution
I tried putting the musescore folder(s) in as exceptions in your antivirus. -Not a solution
Tried disconnecting from wifi/internet while using the musescore software. -Not a solution
I sometimes have this problem when the navigator or more than 2 tabs such as the mixer or selection filter are open. -Not a solution
Also when I have more than ~2 scores open. And if you have other applications running in the background, that could be a factor too. Closed everything, -Not a solution
