Paste Backward? How to Add to Hidden Staff without "Un-Hiding" All Staves?

• Aug 3, 2021 - 04:26

Hello,

I'm in the final edits of a symphonic piece and have Hidden Empty Staves. Now, I'd like to add music to a part that's hidden, but when I "unhide staves" it messes up a lot of formatting, like staff/system text, slurs, etc.

Is there a way to show just a single staff for 5 measures within one system?

Ideally we could "paste backward" and I could paste in a part from measure 20-15, for example, instead of forward from 15-20.

Using OS: macOS 10.16, Arch.: x86_64, MuseScore version (64-bit): 3.6.2.548020600, revision: 3224f34

Any ideas?

Thanks!

I'm not quite sure what you mean about formatting being messed up when you unhide staves - I mean, certainly now the page breaks will be different etc, but it's just temporary while you add the notes, right? Then you plan to hide again and all is well, no?

Normally I'd recommend not hiding empty staves until you're basically done entering notes anyhow, but if you've forgotten a part or whatever, it should be harmless to temporarily unhide. Or you can simply do the edit in the part rather than in the score. Or use continuous view. Or, you can use the keyboard navigation shortcuts to select the empty measure even though it isn't visible - for example, Alt+Up/Down to navigate between staves, and watch the status line to see which staff you are on. Then you can paste or enter notes, and the staff will appear as soon as it is non-empty.

I'm also not sure what you about showing a single staff for 5 measures within a system. Do you mean the system is longer than that but you want a staff to be not shown for the all but those few measures? If so, use the Cutaway option in Staff/Part Properties.

If you continue to have problems, please attach your score and describe what you are trying to do in more detail so we can understand and assist better.

This worked, thanks!

I had to hide staves and send a pre-finalized version to someone for review, when I tried to unhide -> make changes -> hide again after their review some formatting was changed, mostly slurs and positioning of some text.

Issue was that there was a viola part that was divisi in 3, but it wouldn't be heard, so moved one of the div. parts to the first two stands of 2nd violins. But the vln. staff was hidden and didn't know how to find it, and there was a hidden viola cutaway line in there too.

But keyboard navigation worked, thanks so much.
