I want the crescendo hairpin to extend for two bars. Is there any way I can do this without inserting another hairpin? I only want one that can last for two bars.
for now i just clicked on the hairpin to prolong it until the next bar. is there a better way that would make my score look neater?

Well, if you mean slurs, it is the same thing, see https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/slurs#note-input-mode
Ties connect only 2 notes of same pitch, and if need be cross a barline and a system breakl automagically

Recommend to them to read the handbook too ;-)

Sorry, but the handbook is useless in this case. I've had to search tutorials on YouTube to come up with the solution.

Seems pretty clear to me. If you want a hairpin to extend over two measures first select two measures then add the hairpin.
But it you feel it needs further clarification, the handbook can be edited by any user. See https://musescore.org/en/handbook/4/editing-handbook

The cure for that is to read the entire handbook, front to back, at least once ;-)=
HAIRPINS ACROSS BARS
Turn Off the Note entry. Highlight the first note and the last note
of your intended hairpin. Click on the Hairpin you want.
H (cresc.) or Shift H (decresc.)
You can extend the hairpin for as many bars as you like.
