Mellotron Fonts

• Oct 6, 2021 - 15:58

Please see the attached pictures. 1.- To install mellotron soundfonts via musescore and be able to interact with my Yamaha, Roland, and casio keyboards that have midi connection I did buy a cable (TENINYU USB to MIDI Cable Converter 2 in 1 PC to Synthesizer Music Studio Keyboard Interface Wire Plug Controller Adapter Cord 16 Channels Supports Computer Laptop Windows and Mac) but I have not figure out how this work. I suppose the sound would be available from my computer. I downloaded thesesamples available for free here: https://sonicbloom.net/en/free-sb-mellotron-samples/.

There is a free Mellotron soundfont you can download from here https://musical-artifacts.com/artifacts?tags=mellotron
According to the site it is Creative Commons 4.0 but who knows.
I've just tried it and it definitely evokes that eerie Moody Blues sound with some of the presets so it might work for you.
I think if someone spent a bit of editing time in say polyphone (say add some layering and lengthen some of the release times a little) it could be improved. I might give this a go at some stage.

1.-Thank you so much for your kind reply. I have downloaded two soundfonts and associated them with Musescore by a right click and I believe installed them properly. But what do I do now if I want to use my piano keyboard to play them ? I have purchased midi connectors as shown in the attached pictures.

2.-Also, I am from the province of Quebec in Canada, and French speaking, because of that Muse was installed in French, is there a way to change the language in English, it would be simplier because most of the help seems to be in English.

3.-I am on a free trial basis, and I think they are asking for some 85 US dollars, do you know if this is for a year ? I don't know about this company, is this a secure transaction. From seein the help I can get through formum it seems like a good investement.

Thank you for your much appreciated patience.

  1. Use the Mixer to change the sound. No MIDI connectors needed.
  2. Yes, Édition > Préférences... > Générale > Langue. There you'd have the choice of American English or British English ;-)
  3. Not topical here, that is a pure and plain musescore.com issue, not related at all to musescore.org (and hence this forum) nor to the MuseScore editor for Windows, Mac, Linux (which is Free and Open Source). (But 85$ seems a lot, IIRC it is 49$ per year?)

Edit: I'm getting slow ;-)

Thank you so much. Would you happen to know how to enable Musescore to change the pages of a score automatically and always be able to see the cursor (blue rectangle). When the song plays I have to use the mouse to be in sync with the written music. I am French Speaking so here is a link on Youtube where I am trying to articulate my question :

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbJireJhAis

Also on a score with a separate staff for the singing part is possible to mute that to just have the piano part whithout the vocal.

Thanks for any help you might provide !

Thank you so much for your reply. I was wondering it seems there is an app for transposing (changing the keys of the songs). However, I have a traditionnal desktop computer and the app seems to be offered though Apple or Google, would it work for a desktop computer ? Do you know if it is a free app ? I am still on a trial basis do you know where I could look to see the advantages of paying for a membership. Thanks again for your support !

If you just want a free player to play the soundfont with your keyboard (and not for music notation etc) then I suggest the free player called "sforzando" which can be downloaded from here https://www.plogue.com/products/sforzando.html
All you need to do is to drag the soundfont file to the Plogue Sforzando desktop and it converts it to sfz and it will work with your midi keyboard. You will probably need to go into options to select your keyboard and your computer will work best with the free ASIO4ALL audio setup https://www.asio4all.org/

1.-Thank you there seems to be more than one, if I want to get mellotron sounds like King Crimson, Genesis or Yes do you think it is more like string ensemble, which one should I choose.

Is there a way the following question can be asked to all users ?

2.-Is it possible to use Musescore to use the soundfonts (mellotron) installed in Musescore an play them on an external keyboard with midi connectors.

Seems like there might be some fundamental confusion here. A soundfont is something you install on your computer to allow MuseScore's own internal synthesizer to play new sounds. it has absolutely nothing to do with any external synthesizer you might wish to use instead of MuseScore's internal one. If you've installed new soundfonts on your computer, then MuseScore's internal synthesizer can use via the Mixer. Or, if you've rather use sounds on your external syntehszie,r go to Edit / Preferences / I/O and select your synthesizer for MIDI output. The soundfonts have nothing to do with the external synthesizer - unless by some chance it happens to also feature the ability to use soundfonts installed on your computer (but I;ve never heard of any synthesizers supporting such a thing).

I remember some twenty years ago connection my Roland piano to the computer and being able to play the soundfonts inside Cakewalk with my piano, of course the sound came out from the computer speaker but I was using my piano. So this is what I was hoping using mellotron fonts in the computer though my piano and the sound broadcasted through the computer. I never found back a Cakewalk software. I think it is called a sequencer. Sorry for my English, I am French speaking.

Iam rereading myself and it is confusing, I meant I used Cakewalk and connected my Roland piano through midi connection. Then I was able to acces Cakewalk sound bank and play on my Rolland Piano and the sound was broadcasted throught the computer speakers. This is what I am hoping to accomplish. Install mellotron fonts through Musescore and use my external keyboard to play them.

Well, yes, while you can't your keyboard to to actually use soundfonts built into your computer, you can certainly use your keyboard as an input (not output) device to play a synthesizer program on your computer. MuseScore really isn't designed for to be a real-time synthesizer, so you should be looking for other software for that purpose. But if you have configured MuseScore to use a soundfont on your computer, and you've set the playback sound for your select staff to use that sound, then anything you play on your keyboard will playback using MuseScore's synthesizer. You just need to be sure you've selected your external synthesizer as an input device in Edit / Preferences / I/O. But again, programs that are actually designed for that sort of thing would be a better choice.

The Handbook is in the help menu; it tells you that Transpose is under Tools.

You can also access the Handbook via the Support menu on this web site.

Definitely well worth browsing.

And yes, you are of course welcome to save as many different versions of a file as you likle.

The only one way I know to do that, is about to put the SoundFont File (*.sf2) into some device (diskette, USB drive, etc.) recognizable by the Roland Synthesizer and, then, to put that SounFont file INSIDE the Roland memory.
But, I'm not an expert with Roland machines. Sorry!!!
