Issue with DS al Coda and Volta 2

• Dec 28, 2021 - 01:41

Hello everyone,

I'm having an issue with DS al Coda and Volta 2. To be more specific, volta 2 does not work after DS al Coda is reached and play back.

Please see attached. I would like the flow goes like:

A B C E F G F G H A B D E J K L

But now it goes in this sequence:

A B C E F G F G H A B C E J K L (volta 2 doesn't work)

Not sure what's causing this. I've checked the forum and there's a post similiar to my question, but not like the situation I have. Can any help on this? Thanks.

If it's not possible at this moment.

You are attempting to use voltas for other than the intended purpose, so impossibility should be expected at this, or any other moment:
"Volta brackets, or first and second ending brackets, are lines used to mark different endings for a simple repeat. Score playback automatically follows the repeat indications."
"For example, a first ending shows the number "1"; a second ending, the number "2" and so on."
"Each volta section, except the final one, should end with an end repeat barline."
The above was taken from:

I'm just trying to dig out the most Musescore can do.

In your posted score you display every measure in alphabetical order. Your intended opening sequence:
A B C E F G shows that you want to "skip over" the D.
Then the ending sequence:
A B D E J K L
shows that you want to "skip over" the C, use the D that was skipped over previously, re-play the E that was played before, and end with JKL. So, not so simple, and not a job for voltas. Here the approach should be to simplify things and not create a complex roadmap too difficult to follow by musicians.

Sure, one can "dig out the most MuseScore can do":

Although this example plays, and uses jumps and repeats, it's a mess to sight read.

Hi Jm6stringer,

Thank you so much for your explaination and now I am totally cllear. Just like you said, what I was trying to do is to use voltas for other than the intended purpose, so I should stop doing this. It's against music theory, and not a job for voltas. Even if Musescore has bugs to allow me to do this, I should not try, cause the score will just a mess to other musicians.

Really appreciate you help me understand this.
