Editing rhythm
I have a measure with notes and lyrics. It begins with one dotted 8th and a 16th. I decide I want to change those first two notes to be 8ths. What is the best way to do this?
It seems that no matter what method I use to change the dotted 8th to a regular 8th, it puts a 16th rest after, which keeps me from change the 16th note into an 8th. Surely, there is something I am missing...
Interestingly, it works better in reverse. If I have two 8th notes and I want the rhythm to be dotted 8th and a 16th, I can select the first note, add dot, and it makes next note a 16th. Done! It seems it would be preferable in the first example for Musescore to change the next note value instead of adding a rest (which creates a cascade of problems, especially with lyrics).

The best way is to cut and paste the second note backwards onto the newly-created sixteenth note rest, then change it to an eighth note.

Simplest is overwrite what you don't want with what you do want. No need for clever trickery to convert existing notes.

Simply overwriting is what leads to the problem. I then have to re-enter the entire measure (because it changes notes or adds rests as I make changes) and then re-enter the lyrics. If that doesn't happen for you, perhaps you could clarify what you mean by "overwrite." How exactly are you doing that?

If you overwrite dotted eighth + sixteenth with two eighths the total duration is the same so there should be no changes elsewhere, provided you are not using insert mode. As to lyrics, is it such a chore to re-enter? The point is trying to convert an existing rhythm to something else is going to require a process that depends on both the starting and ending situation; if you overwrite you only need to consider the final situation that you are aiming for.

I still don't know what you mean by "overwrite." I agree with your first sentence, it makes sense and is what I want Musescore to do. However, when not in insert mode and I select the note I want to change (a dotted 8th), then press the number corresponding to the value I want (in this case, 4 for an 8th note), it changes the note, but then instantly creates a rest after it. If I select a dotted 8th and a 16th and then press 4, it only turns the first note into an 8th and creates an 16th rest and makes the third note a 16th. If it just made both highlighted notes 8ths that'd would be great and would be much more intuitive.

After entering the first eighth carry on and enter the next eighth So, assuming you want two eighths pitched C followed by D,

No, you shouldn't need to reenter any word.
Method 1:
Change the first note to 8th
Cut and paste note 2
Change length of note 2
-or-
Method 2:
Use insert mode
Change the note 2 to 8th
Change the note 1 to 8th
Or if you changed note 1 first, then you'll have one additional rest to delete
I'm not with my laptop just now but I'll double check that it works later today
