very odd music notation

The 1st one looks like "Mute on (stringsMuteOn)"
Perhaps "m" = "male voice(s)" and "fe" = "female voices"

I don't think this explanation applies to this score since there are two or three more instances like that and I've the feeling it associates to a specific note more than to a stave or system.
Hints for tonic sol-fa? This would fit with F as do, A as mi (oft. abbrev. m) and B natural as fe. It's missing a key signature, mind you.
