Should I try MS 4?
I suppose I should have read the blurb on MS 4 but am wondering whether to try it and most importantly whether it is easy to install MS 4 but still be able to operate alongside in MS 3.6 should there be problems. In other words have 3.6 and 4 both installed at the same time.
Ah - sorry now have read...... no probs.

All Major versions of MuseScore are by default installed side by side.
You'll like MS4 + Muse Sounds once hearing very high quality sound and huge dynamics they exported.

indeed this combo KO some industry players.
MS 4 has very realistic sounds that you'll enjoy. HOWEVER, I'd probably stick with an older version if you're one of those few who tends to write music featuring over 20+ parts (or writing difficult rhythms). MS 4 seems to not be able to handle it, but I still recommend giving it a try.

I haven't had any issues in my larger scores FWIW, and there are lots of examples of others creating them successfully as well. But, it does help to have more than 8 GB of RAM.
