A question about staffs in the middle of a score

• Feb 7, 2024 - 21:18

Greeting all,

A have written a piece for SATB, piano and trumpet. There are a few measures in the middle of the piece that require and expanded score, giving one staff to each voice.

The majority of the voices can be written on 2 staves. In fact, there is some unison singing that could be on one staff.

How can I break up the pages in such a way that the minimum number of staves are used, depending on what section the singers are on. Because I am currently using 7 staves from begining to end, the 3 minute pieces is 18 pages long. I'm sure if I could consolidate most of the measures, I could get it down to 4 or 5 pages.

Can this be done? How?

I hope I've clearly defined the problem, and I thank you in advance for any help the forum has to offer,

Kyle

This is an MU3 file.
I don't have MU3 but what I did, I think works similar. I imploded the sop. and alto staves. And the tenor and bass staves. Then deleted the empty alto and bass staves. Then I reduced the staff spacing to get it down to 6 pages. And relabeled the vocal staves by instrument change to women and men.

Hi All,

I have another question; I'm writing choral music on a condensed score, two staves. The soprano and tenor are voice one and the alto and bass are voice two (blue and green notes, respectively) Now I'd like to copy each part and put it on it's own staff, making an expanded score of 4 staves.

When I try to copy a part, say the soprano (part one) I get both soprano and alto, in other words, everything on the treble clef. Pasting this to the expanded score requires a great deal of deleting individual notes, then rests, as you can imagine, not to mention redoing lyrics. Is there a way to copy only one voice on a staff that has multiple voices? Thanks in advance...

There are mainly two possibilities.
First of all, you can use the selection filter to select only voice 1 or only voice 2 and then copy and paste it somewhere.

Then there are the "Explode" and "Implode" functions under "Tools".
To use these, you must first add a new soprano line under the existing S/A, as well as another bass line. Then you can select the S/A staff and apply "Explode". Now voice 2 is on the second staff.
Do the same with the T/B staff.
You then have four lines, one for each voice S,A,T and B. OK, you should rename the instrument names ...

If you still want to keep the original S/A and the T/B, as in the second score, you can then select the S and A staff together and use "Implode".

I have only used "Explode" in the T/B+Men staff, and both in the S/A+Women staff.
