Making a Suite

• Oct 7, 2024 - 02:20

I have three Musescores saved in three files. I want to make these into a single file suite. I've tried copy/paste but some notes end up all over the place. Is there an appropriate way to combine these three together?

I had a three-movement arrangement and combined them, with a few page breaks, etc. Also you have to make sure your parts are correctly layed out. If you need to put title text, etc for each movement, you really can't do it well. Make a pdf of each and use a desktop publisher application for and bring each file in and arrange it booklet fashion. That is how Finale, Siobelius users worked with publishers in the past. Dorico makers understood this and created separate flows and frames for multiple movements. this works out quite well. Maybe future releases of Musescore will have similar feature

It's actually very easy to do in MuseScore. The equivalent of flows are called sections, and everything you need to start a new movement and give it a title is in the Layout palette. Using a section break indents the next system, uses the long instrument names again, and restarts the bar numbers; and if you select the first bar of the new section and insert a text frame, it will be perfectly positioned for a movement title. You can also insert a page break if required, but it's not always necessary.

I’m still using MS3.6 (old computer) and assure you it does have the section feature. What I do when I want to combine scores, is append the appropriate number of bars to the first section, then make a section break and copy+paste the desired notes into them - repeat as required. You’ll need to set the time and key signatures first, of course. Then add the text frames, etc, and sort out the page layout.

I only use this for simple tune collections - I don’t know whether things like tempo markings and dynamics also copy over. Try it and see!
