Need help creating a note that only sounds in one verse

• Oct 23, 2024 - 07:29

I'm currently using MuseScore Studio 4.4.2. I'm trying to create a lead sheet for a song with 4 verses. Melody line on a treble staff, chord names above, lyrics underneath, standard stuff.

The verses begin with an eighth rest, EXCEPT for verse 3, which needs a single syllable word in that spot and therefore needs a note.

As far as I can tell, in order to have both that rest and the note in the brackets I need two voices, but I can't figure out how to put the second voice on the same staff; every time I try to add a second voice I get a second staff.

I know I've done this before, in MuseScore 3, but I can't remember how and I'm pretty sure the technique has changed. What am I missing?

Mouse entry? Yes. Put WHAT higher at first and then move it down? The note? I can get it in the right place with no problem, along with the brackets. I can also make it smaller than the other notes. What I can't do is add the rest. (Or, if I start with the rest, I can't add the note.) Because that requires a second voice, and I can't figure out how to get the second voice on the same staff.

Look at the picture again. It's from a pdf exported from MuseScore 3. The eighth rest at the beginning of the line is the default, but on the third verse I want an eighth note instead, and it works best if that note appears in the score on the same staff as the rest, just like in the picture.

In MuseScore 4.4.2, if I put the note in, the only way I can add the rest is with a second voice, which I'm fine with; I'm sure that's what I did in MuseScore 3. And I know it's possible to have two voices on the same staff because I find references to staffs with two voices in the documentation, but I can't find any place in the documentation that tells me how to do that. Whenever I try to add a second voice I get a second staff, like this:

I need a way to put the eighth rest in above the note (or the note in below the rest), all on the same staff.

AND I just saw the other answer you gave, with the link to the article about working with multiple voices. Thank you; that's exactly what I was looking for.

Firstly, the heading reads: Need help creating a note that only sounds in one verse. As far as I know: This is not possible and was not possible in previous versions.
But in the meantime, let's discuss how to write these notes and lyrics. But your picture shows that you have solved this problem! If not yet, look here:

The brackets are from the master palette and you can see the assignment to the voices.

If you have, what is the question now?

I apologize if my heading was confusing, but that was the original problem I was trying to solve – how to put that note on only one verse. It was confusing because I'm not talking about playback in MuseScore; I'm just talking about creating a lead sheet and making it look right. And I no longer have the question, because JoJo just gave me the link I need. But thank you.
