D.S. al fine does not include repetitions (MS 4.1.1)
I have a score which contains repetitions (double left bars and double right bars). In the first pass, the repetitions work as expected.
Then I have "D.S. al fine". When the score goes back to "S" for a second pass, it plays from S but ignoring all the repetitions marked with the double bars.
Is this supposed to happen?

Select the DS and in the Properties panel tick "Play repeats". See https://musescore.org/en/handbook/4/jumps-and-markers#change-playback
Standard musical practice is to not play repeats on a DS and that is the Musescore default. If you are going to have the music played by live players you probably should also edit the text of the DS to something like "DS con rep." unless you will be present to tell the players what you want.

Thanks for the clarification and the fast answer. That makes sense.
Now I really have a problem because after enabling "play repeats" inside "DS" properties, it still doesn't play them.

Please attach your score and explain what the sequence should be.

Here it is, thanks.
Mi goal would be: just after jumping back to "S", there are 4 bars that should be played twice (the 4 bars are enclosed inside a repetition mark, so 8 bars in total). From there it should play to the end, and some more repetitions are present along the way.

It doesn't work because you have no Fine. Add a Fine to the final bar and it should work.
However, it is still not very clear as it is unusual for a player to encounter a DS twice - should they do the DS twice?
I would avoid that by making the last bars part of a coda. I would use a DS al Coda with play repeats enabled and edited to read "DS al Coda (con rep.)". I would copy bars 22 and 23 and insert them before the current bar 24, add a To Coda in bar at the end of bar 23 and add a Coda marker at the new bar 24. As the Coda is the last part of the score, no Fine is needed. The end would look like this.

Nice, thanks, I will try that way :)

I think this is still bugged in MuseScore 4.4.3, since if I have a D.S. al Fine at the end of my score with a repeat barline, and I tick the "Play repeats" box, it still won't jump to the segno. Instead it will jump to the beginning of the whole section. And I have a Fine in my score. The only way I can find to get the D.S. al Fine to jump to the segno is to remove the repeat barline entirely, but then of course the score will never repeat. I'm attaching the score I'm working with so that you can see the problem.
Well, it appears I have no visual indication of whether or not I am able to attach the file, so you'll just have to test a case like this to see that the D.S. al Fine function isn't working as intended.

You definitely do get a visual indication that you have successfully attached a file to a forum post: you click to Choose a file, you select the file, and the file appears in the File attachments box (where the Choose a file button sits).
Try again to attach a sample file that demonstrates the issue, because without one, it's impossible to help you.

The repeat bar line has priority. It therefore jumps to the beginning (or to a start repeat bar) and plays the whole score again. Then the "D.S. al fine" is executed, jumps to the "Segno" and plays until the "fine".
Why do you set the "Play repetitions" checkbox for "D.S.al fine"? Which repetitions do you mean - the software asks itself the same question...

Here's the file. I was able to attach it by not using Safari. (Also I wish I could make the lyrics have underscores whenever the tenor or bass parts are moving between notes and still have them align with the top voices' lyrics, but that's a separate topic.)
I want it to use the number of repeats specified by the playback settings of the repeat bar to jump to the segno that many times, and go to Fine at the last one. I was able to do this in MuseScore 2, since that's how I originally transcribed this in 2018 and I've been using it to play it back ever since.
The necessary way to fix this in MuseScore 3 or 4 is to add a beginning repeat barline at the segno. I wish I could make it function like a beginning repeat without looking like one, but I don't think that's possible.
Just out of curiosity, what does the "Play repeats" box actually do? Is that for the case where there's a repeating section somewhere in between the segno and the Fine?

Without your explanation of what you want to happen, I would follow the usual musical practice of jumping from the End Repeat back to the nearest previous Start Repeat or the beginning of the score. I would never read this as jumping back to the Segno multiple times. If you really want it to look this way then place a Start Repeat and make it invisible.
"Play Repeats" overrides the usual convention of not playing repeatiing segments when DS or DC are used.

No, that's not possible and a musician wouldn't understand it either.
The right way is to place a beginnig repeat!
I don't think it was any different in Musescore 2.

And I have just tested it: It behaves exactly the same in MuS 2.3.2 as in MuS 3.7, i.e.: the repeat goes to the beginning - not to the segno.
Only the D.S. al fine will work after the repetitions and it jumps to the Segno and plays to fine.

That's exactly why I wanted to have it behave the way it does. I don't know what I did to make it work in MuseScore 2, since I honestly didn't check the other computer to see what happens while playing it back, I just remember it playing back correctly. But I'll do the thing with the beginning repeat in the second measure, so thanks for confirming that that's the correct notation to use!
