From the example I attached :
I think the lyric should extend under all the notes instead of making the distance between the first and second notes so big.
For syllables that extend for more than one note, group all notes under it
⇒
For syllables that extend for more than two notes, group all notes under it
there's no need for such a long melisma and such a wide distance between 1st and 2nd note, if there are more notes to follow and be part of the same melisma
There are words with 10 character in a single syllable, mayber even longer.. but it really doesn't matter, the above example is treated as a single syllable, looks bad and could look better if the notes would get spaced better. Granted, it is an extrem example, but does show the problem by exaggeration.
This is basically the same as #33246: Hyphenated melisma requires too much space, but I'll leave this open as the descriptions are different enough we should be sure to handle both cases if/when we find a good solution. See my comments in that thread for why this is non-trivial with our current layout algorithms. I get the sense it might be easier to deal with in Werner's "newlayout" branch, might even be handled automatically.

1st and multiple subsequent notes. If there are only 2, this is OK I think

That's nine syllables, though, not "one long one." Or am I misunderstanding?

What are the odds of something that long being a single syllable in the first place?

Lots of choral music has syllables extended over several bars.
This was indeed a duplicate of the other issue and was fixed a long time ago.
