Volta

• Oct 9, 2017 - 14:40

I read all about how to use Volta, but on my sheet it does not work the way I would like. The music we use, we sing three different couplets and then finish with a fourth part. I tried all §he samples gib-ben by other users, but I'm incapable to reproduce it on my sheet. Is there anybody out there that can help me please.

I think this is what you want: right-click on first Volta and change Text to "1. - 2. - 3. "; change Repeat list to 1,2,3. Then right-click on second Volta and change to "4." and 4. The delete the Dal Segno.

Thanks for your fast answer Mr Underquark

I tried it, but unfortunately, id did not work, it plays the first part twice and then continues with part 2.
I’m sure that I make a mistake somewhere, but I dont have a clou, whats wrong. Also explain to me what "Dal Segno" means.

Thanks for your help.

If I understand, you want to play what it in the repeats 3 times and the third time you want to go to the second Volta. You need to right click the last measure before the repeat and select measure properties and change the play count to 3. If you want it to play one more time then change it to 4. The repeat list for the first volta should say 1,2 (,3 if you want the fourth time through) and the second will be be either 3 or 4 depending on how many times the repeat plays. The segnos are the S with lines through them under volta 1 and above the begin repeat.

Thanks mike320, yes now I could modify it, but still I did obtain the result I wanted. I'll send you a small test form and I want measure 1 and 2 to be played 2x and the third time only measure 1 and then measure 3 and 4. I tried everything but did not succeed. Could you tell me where I went wrong. Thanks.

Increase the play count of the measure with the end repeat barline to 3 (or even 4), and modify the volta's repeat list to "1,2" (resp. to 1,2,3).
Not sure whet the3 2 Segnos are good for, without a D.S. there's nothing jumping to them.

Updated the file as I assume you want it. Some hints:
Changed start repeat from measure 2 to measure 1 because alto has two notes there.
Measure 67 changed to repeat 3 times. Right click measure, select 'Measure Properties', bottom right has 'Play Count' field. Change it to what you want.
Prima volta set for measures 1 to 67, this is unnecessary for the repeat, but good for reading/printing. Right click volta line, select 'volta properties', change the 'repeat list' field to a comma separated list count (e.g. 1,2,3).
Measure 67 volta 'repeat list' set to 1,2. Play should skip from measure 66 to 68 on third repeat.
Measure 68 volta removed, the default is to play it anyway.
Measure 68 note ties removed since they don't refer to a note in measure 67.

Hope that helps

Ok, I had to read everything several times because what you tried is not what you said. Anyhow, I have attached the updates, this time I added measures so you can compare mine with yours and change accordingly. I added notes in the score which may help. Don't worry if you haven't programmed before you probably won't be familar with repeats, loops, and count variables, which is what these are.
Hope that helps.

You need to decrease the repeat count by 1 and put a D.C al fine in the last measure and Fine in the last measure that should play. It is also customary to put a double bar line (not an end bar line) where the fine is, but this doesn't affect playback. This will also tell an actual choir to not sing the chorus on the last time through.

Ok, The repeat is set to 4 for measures 1 - 17. Volta spans measures 9 - 17 and plays on the first 3 repeats. On repeat 4, measure 9 - 17 are skipped, the repeat ends, and play falls through to measures 18. Briefly, on 4th repeat, measures 1 - 8, 18 are played. Also set the volta to play 1,2, and 3 repeat counts.

I scrapped the jumps, using them across repeat boundaries is a bad idea in principal. It is better to skip to the repeat end and let it finish normally.
Is that what you wanted?

Not necessary to add the last measure of the verse at the end again in my version.

I divided measure 9 into two measures (however the split tool doesn't seem to work in this score, so I added a further measure, changed the measure duration, excluded it from the measure count and selected the bar line invisible). So it's possible to set the "Fine" to the last note of the verse before the chorus begins.

Thanks Jojo-Schmitz, it did the job.
I have to give everybody who helped me, a very big "thank you" I learned a lot.
But here is an other question: I would like to give a colour to the background of lyrics, a different colour for the different voices, is this possible? I know how to change the colour of the lyrics, but that's not what I want. Thanks in advance.

Hi. It is terrific that your questions are being answered, but it is unfortunate that you have so many different questions in this one thread. Anyone searching for these solutions will not be able to find them

Generally, we start a new thread for new questions so that others can find them.

This explains how to "highlight" items in MuseScore. There is no background color option for text items in MuseScore so this, while tedious at first, is the method you would need to use. It would not be too difficult however, as long as the lyrics are not moved. The easiest way to reuse the highlight on each system is to put it into a custom palette, you can then apply it the same as any other line.

See https://musescore.org/en/handbook-basics/palettes-and-workspaces#custom…

Remember that when that when you apply a line, you have to select the notes where the line spans. The line from the custom palette will be applied in the same relative position as the one put in the custom palette.
