musescore List of all the woodwind instruments and their sounds used in the mixer
I don't know whether this makes me the freakiest band nerd or really dedicated to learning music, but I went out of my way to make a list of all the woodwind instruments (lowercase letters) in Musescore along with their SOUND that's used in the Mixer which is typed in CAPITAL letters (just to be clear, I don't mean to be rude or appear to be shouting by using capital letters).... Also, I attached a notepad file that has all the woodwind and brass instruments listed along with its SOUND written in capital letters... I'll try to do the rest of the instruments later when I'm motivated for strings, etc.

For what soundfont is this mapping?
(The default? ...It would be good to specify.)
Regards.

No special, just GM.

yeah, I think so for Musescore 2...twas the one that came with it.

The sounds are coded in instruments.xml, by means of GM numbers. So they are independent of the soundfont in use.

ok... forgive me, I'm clueless (as usual)... what is GM numbers? And if the sound isn't related to the instrument, why do instruments have particular default sounds in the mixer? Attempting to teach myself this stuff since I am a Forrest Gump attempting to be like DJ Mozart... just because, like others, there are instruments that I never knew existed...like 80 percent of the list for instruments boggles my mind as to what it is. So, it is a lot to explore and learn (which I do enjoy doing) but I think myself, and probably some others, would agree that it'd be nice to have a more efficient way to familiarize oneself with instruments with hearing a sample note or two played (and then explore more notes by ourselves of possible instruments narrowed down from the brief sample that we might want to have). Someone mentioned googling the instrument to hear how it sounds live, but I highly doubt most people want to do that for...um, however many hundreds of instruments. Lol, that's just my thoughts though from whatever posts I see and from what little experience I've had using Musescore

GM is "General MIDI". This is the standard that defines which sounds should correspond to which program numbers in any GM-compatible synthesizer. See for example Wikipedia to learn more.
Basically, GM defines only a small handful of sounds, and yet there are tons of instruments in the real world. So most of those instruments don't have an actual sound in GM, so we just need to pick something we think is kind of close. Sometimes it's closer than other times. And FWIW, we could easily change our minds at any point and decide that, for instance, a recorder is a better imitation of a some obscure African wind instrument than a flute is, or vice vera. but flute will also be the same program number, because that's what GM says it should be.
The reason Googling an instrument makes much more sense that doing what you're doing is that if you really want to know what some obscure instrument sounds like, hearing MuseScore do a poor imitation of it by playing a flute sounds won't help. You'll get a completely distorted representation of what your score will actually sound like when played by real musicians. And if you have no intention of using real musicians, why bother with obscure instruments? Just stick to the standard ones that have real sounds, like flute, rather than obscure ones that are merely imitated using flute.

I'm right there with you, a fellow "freaky band nerd". :) Great to see you exploring and sharing.
Here is an amazing resource if you want to check out even more instruments you don't see that often - http://www.mimo-international.com/MIMO/
It is an online museum of musical instruments.
BTW - been making a lot of changes to instruments.xml, you can check it out on the most recent 2.3 nightly build. Added Concert Band, Marching Band, Choral, and a few other things. Curious to get your feedback.

Hey thanks. I briefly checked it out but will do so more...Lately, I've been up to more band geekiness and made 4 documents that for people to be able to preview all the Woodwind, Free Reed, Brass, Pitched Percussion, Keyboard, Electronic, plucked and bowed string instruments in Musescore by having each instrument play a sample of notes. As the notes are played, the notes on the clef are shown along with the instrument name too, and I figured out ways to condense the number of staves used to 2 -8 staves total rather than having hundreds of staves...I tried to combine all the instruments into one document but then the wood winds started to sound like brass instruments or the notes wouldn't play at all for individual instruments, hence the 4 documents...First one covers the wood winds; second one covers free reed and brass. Third one covers pitched percussion, keyboard, and electronic instruments, and the fourth covers all the string instruments , both plucked and bowed string instruments in musescore. Also, I have the bow string instruments play the same sample of notes 3X instead of once like the other instruments in order to hear each bowed instrument played normally, pizzicato, and tremelo.
Why?
Reading this list makes me sad.
What about the shakuhachi?
Thanks!
