Custom Template not loading correctly

• Nov 4, 2018 - 17:36

I've created my own lead sheet template and saved to the user templates folder. My template displays correctly under the custom templates heading when I'm choosing the template for a new score. When I load the template, however, it does not load correctly. Details:

  • Template created with 60 bars, line breaks every 4, filled with slashes, bass clef, common time, custom style applied.
  • Template loads with number of bars selected from splash menus, system default line breaks, empty measures (whole rests), treble clef, common time, custom style applied.

Is it not possible to save clef selections, fill with slashes, and specified line breaks in a custom template, or have I missed something?

NOTE: Oddly enough, my custom template loads correctly from the Musescore startup splash screen (when enabled), but not when already in the program and creating a new score.

Cheers,
Josh

Also puzzling, my template loads correctly when I simply open the file directly from my file folder. My guess is that maybe something in the new score wizard menus is breaking the template?

Indeed it is not possible to save clef selections, fill with slashes, and specified line breaks in a template. Templates are not designed for that.

Mystery solved! Thanks for the reply, Jojo. It's obviously an easy enough 5-second setup to get those things in there, just always looking for lazy ways to make my workflow bonehead easy when I'm charting a boatload of tunes.

Aside: Could one conceivably get a template to do taxes and take the trash out, too? Asking for a friend...

Rather than using a template, you can save your "template" file as a regular score. Go into your operating system and lock the file so you do not accidentally overwrite it. You can then open that score and change the Key, Time and tempo and be ready to go. You will need to do a Save As the first time after creation so you do not get an error, after that you can use the normal save option.

They probably both take about the same amount of time to alter, my method just prevents you from needing to use the new score wizard.

Thanks for the reply, Mike. In fact, that method works even with the file saved in the "Templates" folder, if I simply open my saved file directly instead of through the wizard. I did just end up settling on using my template as the devs intended (or have allowed for, so far), and making the quick adjustments from there.

Great community—I believe this was my first forum post in almost three years of using MuseScore. Glad to be here. Thanks to you both for making it helpful!

Cheers,
Josh

For you and anyone else interested, "Templates" are nothing more than scores. They can even be complete scores with notes and parts created. When you place it in your custom templates folder and use it as a template, everything that is not instruments or style changes is removed from the score. What is saved in the template file remains untouched and can still be opened like any other score.
