different notehead schemes on same staff

• Dec 10, 2018 - 22:42

So far 3.0 looks great! I love the new Notehead Schemes (under advanced style properties in the staff properties menu).

I would like to be able to switch between two different Notehead Schemes in the same staff. This would be primarily to have the first occurrence of a note labeled, but have every other time use regular noteheads. This aids in the development of reading abilities in students.

Here are examples of what I mean:

Add a Staff Type Change element from the text palette (at least that's where it is for now), then use the Inspector to change the notehead scheme for that element. Although if there is a whole lot of back and forth, might really be easier to just place noteheads manually.

Thanks! The Staff Type Change works (took me a while to figure out that it was the 'S' with a box around it).

As you can see from the examples in my original post, this style usually has a lot of back and forth. How do you do it manually? Dragging over a different notehead from the palette does not overide the note names.

First, don't use drag & drop unless you have a lot of extra time on your hands - better way to add form palette is select element(s) in score to apply to, then double-click palette element.

Second, you don't want the Noteheads palette, but the Symbols palette (press "Z" to display).

Third, you may need to change the "stacking" order in the Inspector so that the symbol appears on top of the original notehead.

Unfortunately, neither of these will do what I was looking for. The Staff Type Change is pretty easy to use, but only works at the beginning of a bar. The symbols palette doesn't work very well. Finicky to operate and doesn't appear to support transposition.

The idea here (as shown in the examples from the original post) is to only have some of the letter names written in per bar. The pedagogical purpose is to only provide as much reading support to the students as necessary and to gradually wean off the extra support.

I don't know how hard it would be to modify the Staff Type Change to occur mid-bar, or if there is another way that would be easier, but if Hal Leonard publishes music that way, I think it is a reasonably feature to add in.
