There is no error message, but clicking the play button only locks everything(normal) until clicked again. There is no playback or bar moving across the music(abnormal).

In order to investigate and hopefully fix the issue, we would need more info. Starting with, what OS, and what settings do you see in Edit / Preferences / I/O. Also what soundfont(s) do you see in View / Synthesizer. And does running Help / Revert to Factory Settings help?
I'm not the OP, but this did happen to me when I forgot I had MS open in the background (not playing), and I unplugged the audio device I used MS previously with to play back my score. When I returned to MS to work on my score again, and attempted to start playback, I experienced the same behaviour.
Restarting MS fixed the issue for me.
Have this same issue on Arch (Using Jack). Synthesizer has the default font, but does not show any note being played.
The problem persists after reset. Sound does play in other JACK software.
However, switching to ALSA output (after closing JACK server) does work as expected.

Hi Marc I have seen this happen with Linux and macOS when a sound driver or interface (MIDI) isn't working / misconfigured. Sorting out the driver and or interface (MIDI) issue mostly sorts it out and play works as expected, however sometimes you need to restart the app to get everything to work correctly. I wouldn't call it a bug more as something maybe to describe to people how to fault find.

When I go into Edit / Preferences / I/O, it is using PortAudio but nothing is showing up as the device or MIDI input/Output. View / Synthesizer is grey and unusable, along with play panel and mixer.
