Time Signature Problem

• Feb 19, 2019 - 02:44

The attached score is a hymn written in different time signatures in alternate measures, 4/4, 6/4, 4/4, 6/4, etc. I created the score in the normal way and populated the first trumpet part, inserting the proper time signature into each empty measure as I went, or perhaps one or two measures ahead of myself.
After completing about half the score that way, I noticed several measures had a "double" signature, i.e. appearing like the improbable 66/44 or 44/44 (see the screen-grab Musescore two times -1). Each time I tried to delete the second 6/4 of the two (highlight, then hit delete), the measure reverted to the previous measure, but still showed the old 6/4 at the start of the measure, see file -2. In other words, it was a 4-count measure showing 6/4 or a 6-count measure showing 4/4. So to fix it, I resorted to emptying the affected measures, deleting them, adding them back, then re-entering the proper time signature and notes.
But each time I saved the file or fixed one of the measures, I got mixed results. Sometimes it "saved" properly, sometimes other measures cropped up with the "double" signature, like Whack-a-mole. You can see them in the attached score after I finally gave up. I've been at this now for about eight hours. BTW, this is the first score I've created in the recently-downloaded Version 3 after several succesful songs done previously in the old version 2.3.2.
Help!! KJN

Comments

A comment made on one of the other fixes to this problem mentioned that someone had "courtesy time signature" ON. Where would I find that option in order to turn it "off"? Or is that a programmer's note?

Also, my problem has nothing to do with toggling between continuous/page view, since I work solely in continuous view. Double key signatures seem to be random and can pop up anytime after a measure is completed (and/or saved) and I've proceeded further along the score.

If/when this issue has been "Fixed", how soon will I be able to access the update and how will it be communicated? KJN

Courtesy key signatures can be turned on and off in the inspector (F8).

Even when you are in continuous view, MuseScore is aware of the page view, in fact if you have auto save turned on MuseScore actually switches to page view momentarily to save the score it does the same if you explicitly save the score.

The fix is actually available in the development builds located at https://musescore.org/en/download#Development-builds. Fee free to test them. All you have to do is navigate to the exe file in the bin folder and run the program, there is no installation necessary. The development builds do not tell you when there is an updates, since there are sometimes 20-30 development builds made in a day. It is unlikely that the nightlies in the 3.0.x section (which is what will become 3.0.3) will cause any of the issues included in the warning of using nightlies. You should be able to start using it and have no issues in the future when you start using 3.0.3 or later.

The wait for the fix is not far away. The actual release is likely to be the beginning of next week (about Feb 25) and there will be release notes that will tell you all of the fixes and changes made in the release. This page is actually being worked on at https://musescore.org/en/handbook/developers-handbook/release-notes/rel…. There are a LOT of fixes in this release already and more expected to be made in the next week.

Finally, when the release is made, shortly after the program will tell you that a new release if available if you have not disables notifications of new releases.

Hello again. The score that's the subject of this train is attached below. Now that a couple of updates to 3.0 have been made since this was first mentioned in February, I figured the "fix" was well embedded in the code.
But when I open this score in 3.1 the random duplicate time signature is still present. I've tried to select a measure and change the key and then change it back again to no avail.
How do I clean up this score and its linked parts? Thanks, as always, for your help to this 76-year-old novice. KJN

The code is indeed fixed, but scores already damaged are won't be altered automatically. To fix the score yourself, go to Format / Style / Page, disable courtesy signatures, save, reload, then turn the option back on. Do this for both the score and the parts (you can use the Apply to all Parts button to do all parts at once).
