copy adjacent measures from score to another
Can't remember how to copy eight adjacent measures from
one .mzsc score to another. They are not both open at same time, right?

The scores can be open at the same time. Select the measures, press ctrl+c to copy, view the other score, click the destination and press ctrl+v to paste.
Just a note of caution - If copying multiple staves at once, you may have strange results if your target score has a different instrument layout than your source.

I can't get both scores open at once.

You should be able to open several scores. Open one score then use the file->Open menu and open the other score. You will have tabs at the top of the score to change between the scores.
