Automatic octave doubling?
It's quite common in recorder music to have an alternative line an octave below the right one for players who can't get the highest notes. It's done as chords: two notes an octave apart, the top one normal sized and the bottom one small. Is there any way to do this automatically in Musescore?

This seems to achieve what you want.
Enter lower notes.
Select all,
In inspector tick [Small] in the Note sub-section
From the add menu select [Intervals] [Octave above].

Absolutely perfect. I feel a bit embarrassed not to have known that, but then I am almost always always setting music for instruments which only play one note at a time, so I had never explored "Add .. Intervals".

This is mine (alternative octave below :
Select notes,
Press Ctrl + Down arrow ("octave down")
Press Alt+8 ("enter octave above")

Once, the "xxx above" shortcuts were defined but did not work properly (maybe 2.x times).
That's when I invented this method for myself.
It's not extremely simple or automatic, but it's not terribly difficult either.
First you need to define a shortcut for "Enter octave below". This will allow you to make a chord from the higher notes. Alternatively you could select the section of music, press ctrl+down to move it all down an octave then alt+8 to add the octave above. Either way you now have your chords.
Add an instrument directly below the existing instrument
Select the section of music with octaves and use tools->explode to put a note on each staff.
On the bottom staff select these measures and in the inspector (F8 toggles it) click notes and in the Note section, set them to small. You can then select the measures in both staves and use tools->implode to put the chords back together.
If you will do this again, the open the instruments (press i) and unmark the visible field for the extra staff until you need it later.
I have shortcuts defined for both explode and implode as well as enter octave below. With practice this becomes routine and not very time consuming. It is far easier than the alternative of using ctrl+click to select each notehead you need to make small, unless it's a very short passage.
