String quartet parts play as timpani and other percussion instruments

Whenever I start a new string quartet arrangement the playback files always default to timpani and other percussion instruments. I have to click F10, and manually reassign the correct instruments to each of the parts. Also, no way to fix when part calls for pizzicato -- playback chooses non-string instrument as the pizzicato playback and I can't find a way to fix this.

Your score plays back fine for me. Are you perhaps using a non-standard soundfont (see View / Synthesizer - anything other than the default MuseScore_General)? If so, switch back to the defualt or some other GM-compatible soundfont. Or use View / Mixer to tell MuseScore which isntruments to use in your non-standard soundfont for each part.
(btw, for future reference "frequency" is for the number of times it has been reported, not how often it happens to one person - that's "reproducibility")

Yes, I use Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra as my default sound font since the MuseScore files do not give true string playback sound. I use the mixer (F10) to change it, but don’t want to have to do this each time I use the program – which is every day. Also, mixer doesn’t allow me to change the pizzicato setting – only the regular string sound.

The MuseScore General HQ soundfont extension should have quite good string sounds. And is is GM compatible.
You can change the pizzicato sound - just click the arrow at the top of the channel strip to expand it.
If you wish to use Sonatina by default with your string quartet scores, set up one that way manually then save it to your Templates folder. Then it will be available to select when you create your next score.

Can you list steps? I've saved it as a STYLE template, but that doesn't keep sound fonts, copyright layouts, etc. It also isn't reliable for matching the look of the parts with the score.

What the "General HQ soundfont extensions" and how do I locate them?

Help / Resource Manager is how you download the soundfont extension.
The steps to save a template is literally just to save a copy of your score to the Templates folder: File / Save As, choose the Templates folder under your main MuseScore3 folder as the destination. Saving a style file is something different, that's not what I'm talking about.

Right, never save anything to MuseScore's own folder (the one in Program Files). Always save your files to your own folder (the one in Documents, like your personal Scores folder - Templates is right next to it).
