File Saving Issues

• Dec 28, 2018 - 06:25

Hello, I'm a new user of MuseScore. I've recently downloaded and installed version 3.0.0.4785.

I am an advanced computer user... I've been in web design for 20 years and I program in php, Java, and JavaScript. I am only telling you this so that I establish my ability as an advanced computer user. This is so that the issue I'm reporting isn't just assumed as "user error".

I am on a Windows 10 Pro machine, 64 bit, OS build 17134.472

I started a new score in MuseScore and immediately attempted to save it via File > Save As.

The default location for saving… C:\Users\USER\Documents\MuseScore3\Scores\

When I clicked the Save button, I received the following error message…

“ C:\Users\USER\Documents\MuseScore3\Scores\FILENAME.mscz You don’t have permission to save in this location. Contact the administrator to obtain permission.
Would you like to save in the USER folder instead? “

I clicked the No button.

Then I attempted to save the file to the Documents folder. I received the same error message as stated above.

Then I attempted to save to a subfolder inside the Documents folder. I received the same error message as stated above.

I have never had any problems saving to the Documents folder or a subfolder in the Documents folder when using any other program. Just to be sure, I checked permissions on the Documents folder, and I checked permissions on the subfolder in the Documents folder that I attempted to save the score to, and also permissions on the default Scores folder (right click on folder > Properties > Security tab) There are three names in the "Group or user names" pane... SYSTEM, USERNAME, and Administrators. All three User Names have permissions for Full Control, Modify, Read & execute, List folder contents, Read, Write. And this was true for all three folders where I attempted to save the score.

I have checked User Accounts and see that I am part of the Administrators group.

I rebooted my computer and still have the same issue.

As an FYI, I have no issues with saving (as an example) a Word document or a psd (Photoshop file) to the Scores folder.

I am able to save the score to the Desktop as well as a subfolder on my Desktop. And I am able to save the score to my USER folder. I am able to make edits and save the file (File > Save or Ctrl + S) with no issues.

As an experiment, I copied (Ctrl +C) the file from my Desktop and pasted it into the Scores folder. From the MuseScore program, I opened the file that I had pasted into the Scores folder. I made some edits then attempted to save the file via File >Save, and I also tried Ctrl + S.

I received an error message that says “Open Temp File C:/Users/USER/Documents/MuseScore3/Scores/FILENAME.mscz.temp failed: No error"

To further experiment, I instead did File > Save As each time I needed to save the file. Each time I did this, it saved to the same location…. MuseScore3\Scores folder. This appeared to work just fine - no error messages... Just the typical message that said FILENAME.mscz already exists. Do you want to replace it? Each time I clicked the Yes button.

After doing a few more edits and saving (File > Save As) the file, I then closed the file, then closed the program. I re-opened the MuseScore program, then re-opened the file from the Scores folder and the only data that was there was the title, the composer name, and a blank grand staff - so basically none of the edits I made after I pasted the file from the Desktop to the Scores folder were saved even though (via File > Save As) it appears to save with no issues.

This was not just a one off as I tested the issues described with a whole new MuseScore file.
1) Cannot save to the default Scores folder.
2) Cannot save to the Documents folder
3) Cannot save to a subfolder in the Documents folder.
4) Any attempt to saving to any of the folders listed above results in a “You don’t have permission to save in this location. Contact the administrator to obtain permission” message

1) Saving to the Desktop, or a subfolder on the Desktop, or my USER folder works fine. Edits can be made and properly saved.
2) If the file is copied from the Desktop or a subfolder on the Desktop and pasted into the Scores folder, then opened from the Scores folder into MuseScore program, the file cannot be saved via File > Save or Ctrl + S. An error message pops up that says ““Open Temp File C:/Users/MYUSERNAME/Document/MuseScore3/Scores/FILENAME.mscz.temp failed: No error"”
3) Saving via File > Save As to the Scores folder appears to work, but no edits get saved. If you close the file and re-open it, nothing you’ve added in is there.

I’ve done a Google search on the issues described and it appears that there’s quite a bit of “Seems like user error” or “Seems like a permissions issue” type replies in response to people who are having the same issues. As a programmer, I am pretty meticulous when it comes to testing and I am certain this is not user error. And, as previously described, I have full permissions on the folders in question. I’ve never had any issues saving to any of my folders with any other program.

I can work around it by just saving all my scores to a subfolder on the Desktop, but I thought it best to report that there are issues saving to other locations including the default Scores location.

Bingo! I didn't even think about my virus protection as I've never had a problem with it blocking anything else I've ever attempted to save to my hard drive.

For anyone who finds this thread via a Google search, if you are using Bitdefender, open the software and click the Notifications option in the left navigation bar. On the Notifications pane, click the Critical tab. You will see one or more "Application Access Blocked" headers. Click the header to expand it and you will see a description that says "The application musescore3.exe attemtped to change a file in a protected folder and was blocked. Protected folder: C\Users\USER\Documents\MuseScore3\Scores.... etc"

Click the "View Application" button. In the Application Access window you will see musescore3.exe listed and a button to the far right that is turned off (blocks access). Click that button. It will turn blue and a white check mark will appear.

You will now be able to save to the default Scores folder.

Repeat the above for any other folders where you are being blocked from saving your scores.

Note: The above instructions are for Bitdefender Antivirus Plus 2019 (Engine version 7.78857). So if you have a different version of Bitdefender, then the steps to allow access for MuseScore might vary.

Thank you JoJo for pointing me in the right direction.

The same thing? An error message reading "C:\Users\USER\Documents\MuseScore3\Scores\FILENAME.mscz You don’t have permission to save in this location. Contact the administrator to obtain permission.
Would you like to save in the USER folder instead? “ That doesn't seem too likely, at the very least I expect the folder to be different (that's very Windows-specific), but also, the error itself is pretty Windows-specific. Can you be more precise about the exact error message you are getting, and what exactly you are doing that leads up to it?

The same error message. I realized, sadly, after losing work that doing a Save As only appears to work. I can't even imagine why this has started happening. I have used the program within the past month with no issues. I just now tried a test save and get the same thing. I'm using a less-than-one-year-old MacBook Pro which is up to date on OS. MuseScore is also most current version.
