Crackling sound on Musescore 3.2.3

• Dec 22, 2019 - 23:48

When Musescore3 is on, including the playback of Musescore itself, every sound in my computer gets crackling sound.

System: Ubuntu 19.10, 64-bit
Memory: 15.3 GiB
Processor: Intel Core i7-6700 CPU @ 3.40GHz × 8
Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 530 (Skylake GT2)
GNOME: 3.34.1
DIsk: 256.1 GB

Strange thing is, it gets occasionally fixed by itself.

It might be the latest version in the repository, but the most recent version is always available as an AppImage from the Downloads page right here on this site, and that's really the preferred way to use MuseScore on Linux, since it is the only way we can control it directly.

That said, I doubt updating will matter, more likely your system just is struggling a little with resources (RAM / CPU).

I have had this really annoying issue regularly for some 6 months. There is no problem with the system (Win 10, plenty of resources) and everything is updated. I can fix it one way: Edit, Preferences, I/O, Restart Audio and MIDI devices. I can see no reason at all for why it occurs in the first place.

Same problem with MuseScore 3.2.3

OS: Ubuntu 20.04.4 LTS, Arch.: x86_64, MuseScore version (64-bit): 3.2.3+dfsg1-4build1 (Ubuntu focal/amd64), MuseScore build number not set, revision: d2d863f

I was able to fix it by switching from PulseAudio to ALSA Audio in: Edit -> Preferences -> I/O
Then restart MuseScore.

I posted more details in the general discussion:

I am using 3.6.2 and regularly have to deal with the crackling sound. I have given up hope that it will go away. If anything it seems to happen more often. Musescore seems to load the wrong audio drivers if a) I open a file outside the Documents directory b) I have some other audio application (e.g. youtube music in a browser) already open. Perhaps there is some method of getting Musescore to choose the proper drivers but the only thing that works is a) stop any other audio application and b) reset audio in Musescore and restart it. Sometimes I even have to restart the computer (which is completely updated, has plenty memory and is working just fine).
