I am new to MuseScore. Does anyone know how to get out of adding notes and finish the song? Especially the area of deleting the extra measures I didn't use.

Use menu item: Tools -> Remove Empty Trailing Measures

The above menu item handles that particular task. More generally, though, to get out of note input mode (or any other mode), simply press Esc.
