3.5 alpha -- lots of problem on Mac (Catalina 10.15.4)
I had a lot of trouble bringing up 3.5 alpha. It certainly installed ok, but, had real problem with the audio; it seemed to have frozen the UI at one point - couldn't get to the preferences dlg or click the midi- plug. I tried it (invoking the app) about three times. At one point, it zeroed the volume of the system audio output (I had to restore it). On another, it showed "Mac Microphone" as the audio device (I'm not going to sing for it). On another occasion, when I switched to Safari and came back, notes didn't play. Audio interaction somewhere between rocky and missing. I abandoned it for now.

Did you try rebooting? There were quite a lot of changes in 3.5 but as far as I know no changes whatsoever to the basic audio handling, so it could be whatever issue you are seeing is concidence.

It (seemingly) so damaged my environment I had to reboot. I'm wary of trying it again.

If the worse that happens if you need to reboot, seems worth the risk to me? Anyhow, as mentioned, nothing changed to my knowledge, and no else is reporting any problems. So it would seem important to find out if there really is some unique quality of your system that is triggering a bug in MuseScore, or if it was actually just an unrelated fluke.
