Percussion Note Input

• Mar 19, 2016 - 14:28

Is there an accepted standard for how/where a certain sound would be represented on a normal staff? I always assumed Noteflight's percussion soundfont was some kind of a standard, but the input on MuseScore seems to be different--not only in the placement of sounds but also in how each note is placed on the staff with the mouse.

There are tons of such standars; each publisher uses a different one, it seems. The one MuseScore uses by default is a reasonably common one, but if you prefer something different, see the Handbook under 'Drum notation" to leanr how to customzie it to your liking. Are there particular differences between MuseScore's defaults and Noteflight's you find most troubling?

It's really annoying that, once I put a note in, trying to change the pitch results in an endless cycle of notes in one section of the staff (at least this happens with the cymbals, etc.). It's a pain to have to delete the note entirely and double-click every time the sound isn't what I want. None of the other instruments seem to have this problem--only the percussion.

Can you explain what you mean in more detail? Why would you enter a note then change its pitch? Why not just enter the note you want in the first place? And in the cases where you decide you do want to change the pitch of a note for whatever reason, how is this process any different for percussion than for other staves? It should be exactly the same - press the arrow key until you reach the desired pitch. I guess it might be harder to guess which way to press the arrow, but actually, if you look at the drum input window, you can pretty much see what the sequence is right there (it's the sequence defined by the General MIDI standard, but only including the notes defined in your current drumset definition).

Also, you don't have to delete a note in order to replace it ith another - just enter the new note directly on top of the old and it will be replaced, assumning both notes are in the same voice.

In any case, I don't understand what that has to do with the question of which notes display on which lines. Could you explain in more detail?
