color of some of the notes
I want to set the color of those notes I have now in the score to red, then
I want to add more notes in black color. I think I have done something
similar some time ago because I have a score that has melody in red.
I cannot now figure out now how to achieve it.

It's always very hard to answer your specific question if you don't attach a score showing what's going on, but could it be that what you're seeing is the warning that the notes are out of the instrument's range?
To set the color of any given note, first select the notes, then use the Inspector (View / Inspector or F8 if it isn't already open) to change the color.
If I interpret you correctly (and apologies if I do not), you want to make those notes that you have already created turn red and then add some new notes but have them black (so that you can show or teach something?).
Right-click on a note and "Select all similar" then go to Inspector and change the colour. This will only affect the current notes but any new notes that you enter will still be the default colour (Black),
