Problems with Fermata symbol in MS 1.0, and more

• Aug 3, 2011 - 18:25

Hello
A few days ago I mentioned the problem of the non-properly appearing symbol of the Pedal in MS 1.1, which is why I had to eventually go back to using MS 1.0.
Now I must report a new finding. In MS 1.0, fermatas are not behaving as they should. To be exact, they can not be placed over a rest. They only work over actual notes. Or am I mistaken ?
So, again, I was forced to take another step back and start using again the good - old MS 0.9.6.3.
Not to mention that there are a number of other really BIG problems that are still not fixed and keep occuring in the new versions. I regret saying that I keep wasting endless hours to rewrite whole pages of measures that suddenly crash (tuplets turn to plain notes when copied and pasted, tempo markings dissapear or mysteriously appear in other locations after inserting new measures in my score, measures of 3/4 suddenly can contain no more than, say, a dotted quarter note, and a series of such odd situations).

It becomes rather dissapointing for someone who wants to seriously present a complete and well written score. I really hoped that things would get better with the newer versions.
(Just in case there is something I'm doing wrong when using MS, are there any detailed explanations or guidance -other than the Hand Book- regarding the use of system text or staff text and so on?)

Anyway, I would be obliged if there was at least a way to fix the small problems like the fermatas over rests. Anxiously waiting for an answer...

Thank you very much.

I'm running 1.1 and tested the fermata problem myself on a clean staff, i.e. no notes, just whole rests. This is what I found out. The fermata symbol does get placed on the page, just not above the rest it is being placed on.

Steps to reproduce:
Create new piece using piano as the instrument and enough measures to fill two lines of measures filled with whole rests.
Choose and drag the fermata symbol (either one) over the first whole rest in the treble staff. The symbol appears at an approximately 30 to 45 degree angle someplace in the bass staff, usually around the 5th to 6th measure.

So, the fermatas do appear, just not where they're supposed to appear when put over a rest.

Drag & drop works that way (incorrectly), but clicking the rest then double clicking the femerat in the palette works fine for me in 1.1.

In hindsight, it doesn't surprise me that attaching things to the default full measure rests is buggy, as those aren't "real" rests.

Did you ever submit an issue to the tracker regarding the pedal issue? That seems to me like probably the most important bug reported in 1.1 thus far.

As for any problems you might have placing fermatas over rests, there should be no need to revert to earlier versions to work around that - just place a note in another voice and mark it invisible.

Also, it would be nice to find out out if changing the pedal symbol manually via Line Properties actually is a viable workaround, or if that will end up breaking things when the bug itself is fixed.

There were tons of bugs fixed between 0.9.6 and 1.0, and tons more between 1.0 and 1.1. Going backwards to workaround one bug should a last resort only, as you're going to a less usable release overall and it's bound to nite you.

Going back in versions is definatly not a good idea. You should stick in version 1.1 and try to solve the problems there.
Regarding fermatas, just select the rest and double click the fermata in the palette and it should work fine.
Regarding the pedal, we should find a work around in version 1.1.
