Extend slur past line break not optimal

• Sep 10, 2016 - 23:41

MS v 2.0.3 . Suppose I have one or more sequential notes in a bar that has a line break at the end (i.e. the bar is the last in a system). Suppose that there are several sequential notes in the following bar on the next line.

I can make a slur (using the GUI) from that last note to the first note on the next line. In the current state then, the curve on the top line is selected, and if I try to extend that slur using Shift-ArrowRight , then it fails. This caused me to scratch my head and do a workaround (playing with the line breaks).

However, I later realized that if you rather select the tiny bit of the slur on the next line, then that can indeed be extended.

Note also that if you start your slurring before the last note in that first measure, it all works as expected, across the line break. Suggested fix: Ensure that the last leg of the slur is selected, after creation.

Not a show stopper, but did stump me for a bit, and I thought I should mention it as a good citizen. Maybe it's known, but I did not see it. I'm happy to file a bug if the MS guys want me to.

I think I have an idea why that occurs.

Assume you want to alter the appearance of either the first line part or the second line part of the slur you have to be able to do that separately. And sure enough if you double click on either of the parts you get the handles on that part only. Which may explain why the extension by shift-arrow does not work across a one break. I like that feature. I like to extend the "tiny bit of slur" on the second line a little and also to tilt the parts of such slurs to follow the direction of the music, up if it is rising, down if it is descending. I believe such pointers help reading the music.

One thing you can do in this situation is to use continuous mode and only switch to page view mode when you start formatting and arranging for page turns and such (I don't do that; if you have a larger score it is easier to find your way around in it using page view).

BTW: It is generally a bad idea to correct the shape of slurs and ties (and the vertical position of lines) before your note entry is finished and all your line breaks are finalized. Only then will you know which slurs fall on a line break and need attention.

I can confirm that the intent is that if a slur continues across a system break, you should be able to edit the shape of both segments of the slur independently, and this seems to work fine for me.

I am guessing you are trying to add a slur one note at a time by selecting the first note only, then adding the slur, then pressing Shift+Right? This works, but indeed isn't optimal if the slur starts on the last note of a system. Much easier to select the range first then add the slur in one go. Probably makes sense to improve the behavior for Shift+Right anyhow, but hopefully adding the slur in one step will be easier still.

Thanks azumbrunn and Marc. Yes, I have previously edited both segments, and that's important. I was just pointing out that after creating that first slur, the second segment should be left in selected (edit) mode. A minor matter to be sure. You're right that it would be more efficient to do the whole range at once.

But I use MS in bursts. Next time, I will have forgotten everything and go down the same paths, and hit the same issues again. The slur thing is a minor matter, but it's good if the tool works slickly. Thanks for listening.
