Zooming with a focus on selection
It would be nice to be able to select a measure and then when using zoom-in and zoom-out to have that measure be where the zoom focuses into the the center of viewing. I mean to say that if you've zoomed out for a bird's eye view and then select a measure, then zoom in, by the time you're fully zoomed in the selected measure should be at the center of the viewing. I'm reminded of certain digital audio workstations: when you place the the playback cursor somewhere and then zoom in and out, the playback cursor is the spot with which the zoom focuses. Something like this but for a measure or even the note that is selected. Does this sound like decent idea? Is it already implemented and I'm missing something?

How do you zoom exactly? Using ctrl+scroll does center to mouse pointer.

I'm using the Ctrl-+/- shortcuts and haven't noticed a correlation between it and the mouse pointer. Unfortunately I don't have a scroll feature on this little system of mine (archaic I suppose).

Selected element?
If nothing is selected, center of view.

Maybe an an extra programmable shortcut would work. Instead of the "blind" zoom in/out, have also a "Zoom in to element/first element in selection".

I presume mouse position would work as well.
Do we have an idea what other (graphic) programs do?

I suspect the driver for your mouse *does* have a scroll wheel / zoom option - could be something like holding Shift or Ctrl or Fn or Alt while moving up/down, etc. Check the settings provided by your OS / driver.

Haha Marco, remember this? (https://musescore.org/en/node/112016#comment-504916). I got around to emulating the scrolling with the mouse through customizing my .xorg configuration. Unfortunately it was at the expense of some back/forward browser functioning of the mouse, but that can be done with alt+left/right.
Even with this functionality of the wheel for scrolling and ctrl+wheel to zoom, there still is a wanting of a zooming into where my mouse lies or a particular section on my system. I therefore have to combine scrolling with zooming in order to achieve the desired view. If the ability to zoom toward "selected element" or "beginning of selection" were in place, it would greatly simplify the action.
